I only met Pierre Boulez once, but it is a very vivid memory. It was in Cleveland at Severance Hall, and it must have been 10 years ago. My recital was in the beautiful Reinberger Chamber Hall, underneath the main Severance Hall stage. The programme: Messiaen--the complete Preludes; then after intermission Bach's Goldberg Variations. The management told me before that he would be there. How I had the nerve to get up at the beginning and speak about Messiaen and his Preludes, I don't know, but I did. Great music which I love. Then the Bach. He came immediately to speak with me afterwards and was so warm and appreciative, saying how good it was to hear those early works of his former teacher. I also remember the driver for the artists, who was looking after the maestro that week, saying that the elevator in the apartment-hotel building where he was staying went out of order, but Pierre, with no problem at age 80, walked up 18 flights of stairs, carrying the groceries, putting to shame the young man who was huffing and puffing behind him. Impressive in every way.

ピエール・ブーレーズとは一度だけ会ったことがありますが、今でも良く覚えています。 それはクリーブランドのセヴァレンス・ホールで、確か10年前のことです。私のリサイタルがセヴァレンス・ホール地下の美しいラインベルカー室内ホールでありました。プログラムはメシアンの前奏曲全曲と、そして休憩後にバッハのゴルトベルク変奏曲。マネジメントが前もってブーレーズが来ると教えてくれました。 メシアンの前奏曲を正しく解釈できる勇気があったかどうかはわかりませんが、とにかく演奏しました。私が愛する偉大な音楽です。次にバッハ。
コンサート後すぐにブーレーズは私と話すため来てくれました。ブーレーズの恩師の初期作品の演奏がいかに素晴らしかったか、温かく好意的に話してくれました。
私はまたブーレーズの運転手を覚えています。彼はその週マエストロの身の回りの世話もしていました。彼が言うには８０歳のブーレーズは滞在していたアパートメントホテルのエレベーターが壊れているのも問題とせず、食料品を抱えて１８階までの階段を軽々と上がって行ったそうです。それは息を切らして文句をいいながらブーレーズのあとをついていく若い運転手を赤面させました。
どれもいい思い出です。
