そのあたりは、彼女のアルバム Blues in the Night の中の "The I'm Too White to Sing the Blues Blues" に、彼女が付け加えた歌詞あたりが、その一端を表しているように思えます。

Disregard the name
"Ann Hampton Callaway"
English, Scottish, Irish
A honky all the way
Lionel wasn't pappy
Neither was ol' Cab
Ev'ry day I curse the way
My life is dull and drab
Go on and spread the news
I've got the I'm-too-white-to-sing-the-blues blues!
Got a payin' job
A man who's good and true
A spacious flat in New York City
How could I be blue?
My credit cards are paid up
Except for MasterCard
If my life is such a piece of cake
Tell me why is it so hard?
I ought to hit the booze
I've got the I'm-too-white-to-sing-the-blues blues!
Well, I dig my Ethel Waters
Bessie Smith takes my breath away
And I live for ev'ry word of pain
From Billie Holiday
Sometimes when I'm lonely
I think I have my chance
I try to sing St. Louis Blues
To my cat and my houseplants
But my cat gets catatonic
My violets start to shrink
When the ivy starts to climb the walls
It's time to pour a drink
Each time I try, I los
E I've got the I'm-too-white-to-sing-the-blues blues!
Each time I try I lose
Spoken "Come to me Patti LaBelle"
Ah…huh!
Spoken "Oh, that was pathetic!"
I know you feel that way, too, sometimes, don't ya
You listen to the radio and say
"Hey, I wanna sing like that"
But first you make sure that no one is spying on you
And then you let it out in your shower
And you feel so fantastic
Until you find out
Your girlfriend or your boyfriend
Or your husband or your wife
Or your cat or your dog
Is making fun of you
You, too, have the I'm-too-white-to-sing-the-blues blues!

編曲は Mill Mays & Ann Hampton Callaway です。
Oh Lord, why did you send the darkness to me?
Are the shadows forever to be?
Where's the light I'm longing to see?
Oh Lord, once we met by the old willow tree
Now you've gone and left nothing to me
Nothing but a sweet memory
Willow weep for me
Willow weep for me
Bend your branches green
Along the stream that runs to sea
Listen to my plea
Listen willow and weep for me
Gone my lover's dream
Lovely summer dream
Gone and left me here
To weep my tears into the stream
Sad as I can be
Hear me, willow, and weep for me
BRIDGE
Whisper to the wind
And say that love has sinned
To leave my heart breakin'
And makin' a moan
Murmur to the night
To hide the starry light
So none will find me sighing
And crying all a-lone
Oh, weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
When the shadows fall
Bend, oh willow, and weep for me

You can walk around life
With a cloud over your head
Feelin' glum, feelin' numb
Thinkin' it's cool to be discontented
That ev'rything is demented
You're gonna feel sad
Life's gonna be bad
And ev'ry single morning
You'll wake up feeling bereft
'Cause your get-up-and-go got up and left
CHORUS
But ('Cause) don't you know that it's
Hip to be happy
To give life a big hello
It's hip to be happy
To say yes when the world says no
It's hip to be happy
The light is green
Come on, let's go!
Yes, the fashion police
Are gonna slap you with a fine
If you're depressed and overdressed
Wearin' a chip upon your shoulder
It makes you look older
What's with the pout?
Baggage is out
Accessorizing is an art
You must acquire to make a catch
So put on a smile with shoes to match
Primis Player Placeholder
CHORUS
All you artists out there
Must especially beware
Don't be bought by the thought
"You must suffer for your creation"
Pain's not a vocation
Forget the abyss
And follow your bliss
The cutting off of ears
Is not a great-art-guarantee
It was good for Van Gogh but not you and me
CHORUS
'Cause don't you know that it's
Hip to be happy
To give life a big hello
It's hip to be happy
To say yes when the world says no
It's hip to be pealing with laughter
It's hip to be grinning ever after
It's hip, inspite of it all
It's hip to be happy!
It's the wrong time and the wrong place
Though your face is charming, it's the wrong face
It's not her face, but such a charming face
That it's all right with me
It's the wrong song in the wrong style
Though your smile is lovely, it's the wrong smile
It's not her smile, but such a lovely smile
So it's all right with me
You can't know how happy I am that we've met
I'm strangely attracted to you
There's someone I'm trying so hard to forget
Don't you want to forget someone, too?
It's the wrong game with the wrong chips
Though your lips are tempting, they're the wrong lips
They're not her lips, but they're such tempting lips
That if some night you're free
Dear, it's all right
Yes, it's all right with me
My mama done tol' me, when I was in knee-pants
My mama done tol' me, "Son
A woman'll sweet talk and give ya the big eye
But when the sweet talkin's done
A woman's a two-face, a worrisome thing
Who'll leave ya to sing
The blues in the night."
Now the rain's a-fallin'
Hear the train's a-callin
"Whooee!"
(my mama done tol' me) hear dat lonesome whistle
Blowin' 'cross the trestle
"Whooee!"
(my mama done tol' me) a-whooee-ah-whooee ol' clickety-clack's a-echoin' back th' blues in the night
The evenin' breeze
'll start the trees
To cryin' and the moon'll hide it's light
When you get the blues in the night
Take my word
The mockingbird
'll sing the saddest kind o' song
He knows things are wrong
And he's right
From Natchez to Mobile, from Memphis to St. Joe
Wherever the four winds blow
I been in some big towns an' heard me some big talk
But there is one thing I know
A woman's a two-face, a worrisome thing
Who'll leave ya to sing
The blues in the night
My mama was right

[Verse 1]
You've got to give a little, take a little
And let your poor heart break a little
That's the story of, that's the glory of love
You've got to laugh a little, cry a little
Until the clouds roll by a little
That's the story of, that's the glory of love
[Verse 2]
As long as there's the two of us
We've got the world and all it's charms
And when the world is through with us
We've got each other's arms
You've got to win a little, lose a little
Yes, and always have the blues a little
That's the story of, that's the glory of love
[Chorus]
That's the story of, that's the glory of
That's the story of, that's the glory of
That's the story of
That's the glory of love

VERSE
I was a humdrum person
Leading a life apart
When love flew in through my window wide
And quickened my humdrum heart
Love flew in through my window
I was so happy then
But after love had stayed a little while
Love flew out again
CHORUS
What is this thing called love?
This funny thing called love?
Just who can solve its mystery?
Why should it make a fool of me?
I saw you there one wonderful day
You took my heart and threw it away
That's why I ask the Lord in Heaven above
What is this thing called love?
こういう言い回しがあるのですね。
when your heart turns on the juice
この部分の適当な和約を目にした記憶がありません。
また、この部分は、1929年に始まり、1930年代後半まで続いた米国大恐慌の頃に作られた曲だということをわからせてくれますね。
Comes depression, you may get another break
しかし、アンは上手いですねぇ…
Comes a rainstorm, put your rubbers on your feet
Comes a snowstorm, you can get a little heat
Comes love, nothing can be done
Comes a fire, then you know just what to do
Blow a tire, you can buy another shoe
Comes love, nothing can be done
Don't try hiding, cause there isn't any use
You'll start sliding, when your heart turns on the juice
Comes a headache, you can lose it in a day
Comes a toothache, see your dentist right away
Comes love, nothing can be done
Comes a heatwave, you can hurry to the shore
Comes a summons, you can hide behind the door
Comes love, nothing can be done
Comes the measles, you can quarantine a room
Comes a mousey, you can chase it with a broom
Comes love, nothing can be done
That's all, brother, if you ever been in love
That's all, brother, you know what I'm speaking of
Comes a nightmare, you can always stay awake
Comes depression, you may get another break
Comes love, nothing can be done
Comes love, nothing can be done
Comes love, nothing can be done
[Chorus]
At last
My love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
(Oh, yeah, yeah)
[Chorus]
At last
The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you
[Bridge]
I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I've never known (Oh, yeah, yeah)
[Chorus]
You smiled, you smiled
Oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in Heaven
For you are mine at last
It's a lazy afternoon
And the beetle bugs are zooming
And the tulip trees are blooming
And there's not another human in view
But us two
It's a lazy afternoon
And the farmer leaves his reaping
In the meadows cows are sleeping
And the speckled trouts stop leaping up stream
As we dream
A fat pink cloud hangs over the hill
Unfolding like a rose
If you hold my hand and sit real still
You can hear the grass as it grows
It's a hazy afternoon
And I know a place that's quiet, except for daisies running riot
And there's no one passing by it to see
Come spend this lazy afternoon with me

[Verse 1]
I took my love, took it down
I climbed a mountain, and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Till the landslide brought me down
[Verse 2]
Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Hmmmm
[Chorus]
Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder, even children get older
And I'm getting older too
[Guitar Solo]
[Chorus]
Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder, even children get older
And I'm getting older too
Oh, I'm getting older too
[Verse 3]
I take my love, take it down
Oh, climb a mountain and turn around
And If you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring you down
[Outro]
And If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring you down
Oh, the landslide will bring it down

[Verse 1]
Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
[Chorus]
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
[Verse 2]
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why, then, oh, why can't I?
[Outro]
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh, why can't I?

So often as I wait for sleep
I find myself reciting
The words I've or should have said
Like scenes that need rewriting
The smiles I never answered
Doors perhaps I should have opened
Songs forgotten in the morning
I relive the roles I've played
The tears I may have squandered
The many pipers I have paid
Along the roads I've wandered
Yet all the time I knew it
Love was somewhere out there waiting
Though I may regret a kiss or two
If I had changed a single day
What went amiss or went astray
I may have never found my way to you
If I had changed a single day
What went amiss or went astray
I may have never found my way to you
I wouldn't change a thing that happened
On my way to you

You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by
And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs are never out of date
Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate
Woman needs man and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs are never out of date
Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate
Womans need man and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by
Here I go again
I hear those trumpets blow again
All aglow again
Taking a chance on love
Here I slide again
About to take that ride again
Starry eyed again
Taking a chance on love
I thought that cards were a frame-up
I never would try
But Now I'm taking the game up
And the ace of hearts is high
Things are mending now
I see a rainbow blending now
We'll have a happy ending now
Taking a chance on love
Here I slip again
About to take that tip again
Got my grip again
Taking a chance on love
Now I prove again
That I can make life move again
In the grove again
Taking a chance on love
I walk around with a horseshoe
In clover I lie
And brother rabbit of course you
Better kiss your foot good-bye
On the ball again
I'm riding for a fall again
I'm gonna give my all again
Taking a chance on love

いかがでしたでしょうか。
アルバムタイトルが Jazz Goes to the Movies
