Many of Arsenal's first-team players are back in training at London Colney.
The 2011/12 campaign edged a little closer on Tuesday morning as Arsène Wenger's squad shook off the summer cobwebs and returned to the training pitches.
New signing Carl Jenkinson took part in his first session while young prospects like Ryo Miyaichi also limbered up with more established stars.
Some players have yet to return following international commitments at the start of June but our official Club photographer was at Colney to capture the rest of the squad in action.
The power generated by Rooney's muscular thighs enabled him to run the length of the field at an average speed of 14mph to meet Nani's pass and score United's second goal during Sunday's 3-1 triumph at Arsenal. The fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, runs 100m at an average of about 23mph.
Like former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and current colleague Darren Fletcher, Rooney is benefiting from the gym work he puts in with United's strength and conditioning coach Mike Clegg, who devises individual weight programmes for the players.
Rooney will focus on squats, lunges and power snatches with weights to improve the strength and speed in his lower body, similar to the methods used by top sprinters - such as the Jamaican world-record holder - who have disproved the notion that big muscles can slow you down.

I worked with Ronaldo for 5 years. he came as an 18 year old, without a great deal of senior experience. He became the most dedicated footballer I have ever met over those 5 years. He did all the training prescribed by football coaches, the manager, the fitness coach and the gym coach, but he also did something much more…..?
After every training session out on the pitch, he did his own running, running with the ball, running with the ball crossing, running with the ball shooting and running with the ball passing.
The great thing that CR realized is that to really train successfully, there must be a good percentage of your skill and speed training done with no pressure. He made sure that he rehearsed every move without any pressure on his own; he then practiced every move in training on the practice pitch.
Ultimately when he practiced and got everything right he would then try his new formed skill in the big stadium in the big game. (Skill, skill under pressure, skill in the game) And became the world’s best player.
