Harry Warren (December 24, 1893 – September 22, 1981)

ハリー・ウォーレンは米国の映画音楽を手がけた最初の主要な作曲家と言われています。
彼が手がけた映画は56本ほどあり、彼の曲は300本以上の映画に使われたとされています。
彼はアカデミー賞 Best Song に11回ノミネートされ、オスカーを3回受賞しています。

彼の曲はラジオの番組"Your Hit Parade"でトップ10に42曲も入り、その中の21曲はナンバーワンになっています。

ハリー・ウォーレンがコンビを組んだ作詞家には、Al Dubin, Billy Rose, Mack Gordon, Leo Robin, Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer 等がいます。.

また、生涯に800曲以上の曲を書いたとされています。


ハリー・ウォーレンの逸話として残っていますのが、彼は根っからの家庭人で、1932年から40年間もビヴァリー・ヒルズに住みつづけていて、ハリウッドのパーティにはまったく行ったことがなかった、ナイトクラブにも競馬場にも行かなかった、と言うのがあります。

ハリー・ウォーレンはイタリア移民の子として米国N.Yで生まれました。
彼は14歳の頃、独学でドラムの練習を始め、16歳で祖父のカーニヴァル・バンドに参加し楽旅をはじめました。
またピアノも独学で練習し、1915年に Vitagraph Motion Picture Studios で働き始めます。

（このコミュニティの参加者の方は、次の年号、1927年にトーキー映画が出現したことはご存知ですね。1915年は、まだサイレント映画の時代です）

彼は1918年に米海軍に入隊し、作曲を始めたとされています。

彼は1932年から Warner Brothers で仕事を始め、1944年にMGMに移っています。

この間に非常に多くの映画音楽を手がけました。

アレック・ワイルダーの書いた本
American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900-1950 （1972年の出版）
の中で The Great Craftsman の一人としてハリー・ウォーレンが紹介されています。

ハリー・ウォーレンもまた、多くのヒット曲の作者であるが、そのほとんどが映画からのものであり、ウォルター・ドナルドソンよりやや後に初めて聴かれた。そして、レコード番組のリスナーにとって彼が無名であることは、ディスクジョッキー側の不作法な怠慢だと私は思う。彼が最高の演劇作家と同じカテゴリーにはいなかったのは事実だが、第一級のポップ・ソング・ライターであったことは間違いない。
少なくとも音楽的には、私が特に気に入った最初の曲は『Would You Like To Take A Walk』である。この曲はブロードウェイ・ミュージカル『Sweet And Low』（1930年）に収録されている。この曲を注意深く調べるまで、私はこの曲の良し悪しを判断できなかった。そして今、私が偏見を持っていたのは、かわいすぎる歌詞のせいだとわかった。メロディーも詩もコーラスも、ポピュラー・ソングよりも幅広い音楽の知識を示唆する、とてもいい文章だ。

『オーケストラ・ワイブス』のもうひとつの素晴らしい曲は『セレナーデ・イン・ブルー』だ。この曲は、ウォーレンらしからぬ曲で、作者については謎に包まれている。カーマイケルかもしれないし、リリースを聴けばアーレンかもしれない。確かに音符でいっぱいだが、どれもいい音で、とてもきれいな変化がある。
リリースは非常に大胆な音符の繰り返しである。6小節は同じ4つの音で始まる。しかし、これらの小節の後半にはそれぞれ非常に微妙な変化がある。これらのバリエーションは単調さを避けるだけでなく、前半の小節の繰り返しをほとんど要求している。とてもグルーヴィーな曲で、すべての歌手やバンドのお気に入りに値する。

日本の牛乳瓶よりはるかに大きい瓶が針金で作った籠に何本か入ったものを戸口に置いていきます。
あの瓶は1パイント（約2L)ぐらいの大きさで、映画を観た子供の頃は、アメリカ人はこんなにたくさん牛乳を飲むのかっ！と驚いた記憶があります。

"No Love No Nothin'"の方は、知っている人がどれだけいらっしゃるか…という曲かもしれません。

この二つの曲をくっつけた意味がもう一つよくわかりません。

この曲はミュージカル（舞台）42nd Street (1980) で使われました。

もちろん"42nd Street"はこのミュージカルで使われています。
他にもハリー・ウォーレンがこれまでに書いた曲も使われています。

曲調が、スイング時代全盛期のような感じを受けて、これが1980年の曲とは思えないくらいです。
なかなかいい曲ですね。

映画で使われてはいない曲で、ファッツ・ウォーラーの歌と演奏でよく知られているそうです。
（アルバムのライナー・ノーツにそうありました）

なんとなく中近東風のメロディが出てきますが、映画のタイトルはナイトクラブの名前だそうなので、ショウで使われた音楽なのでしょう。

Whirling Dervish というのは
《イスラム教》旋舞教団（員）◆イスラム神秘主義の一派
だそうです。

なかなか調子がいい曲なのですが、今では耳にしない曲のようです。
マック・ゴードンの詞もなかなか楽しいものなのですが、スザンナが歌っている歌詞そのものは見つかりませんでした。

この曲の歌詞の和訳を手がける人の耳にまでは届かない曲なのでしょうね。
和訳は見当たりませんでした。

この曲を取り上げる人がもっと出てきてもいいように思います ^^;

このアルバムはスザンナのアルバムの中でも初期のものなので、声が若々しいですね。

このミュージカルは、不況で仕事にあぶれた舞台関係者のサクセス･ストーリーを通して、大恐慌時代に生きるアメリカ庶民に勇気と希望を与えようとした作品だそうです。
この曲はその核となるテーマを活かし、アメリカ社会を底辺から支える名もなき庶民の苦悩と魂の叫びを、劇中劇としてまとめたもの、だそうです。

かなり重たい歌詞を持った曲になっています。

ハリー・ウォーレンは映画会社 Warner Bros の仕事をしていたときにAl Dubin とコンビを組んでいたのですね。

ハリー・ウォーレンがコンビを組んだ他の作詞家としては、このアルバムを見る限り、Mack Gordon が多そうで、さらにはJohnny Mercer とも組んでいたのですね。

作詞家のソングブック・アルバムは作曲家のものに比べて少ないのですが、 これは何人の作曲家と仕事をしたかという要素もあるのかもしれませんね。
しかし、Al DubinとMack Gordonのものはあってもよさそうな気がします。

チャタヌーガ・チュー・チュー(Chattanooga Choo Choo) というのは、シンシナティ市が初めて建設した公共鉄道であるシンシナティ･サザン鉄道が1880年に運行を開始した、シンシナティ発チャタヌーガ行きの旅客列車の愛称である、そうです。

・さて、この汽車はニューヨーク市にあるペンシルヴェイニア駅を4時15分前に発車となっています。

ここで地図をしっかりと見てください。

シンシナティ（Cincinnati）は、アメリカ合衆国オハイオ州南西端に位置する都市で、N.Y. からはず〜っと南西方向に離れています。

これは、名古屋と大阪（難波）を結ぶ関西本線が札幌駅を始発しますよ〜と言っているのと同じようなことではないでしょうか？

・雑誌でも読んでいるうちにボルチモアを通るそうです。

ボルチモアはメリーランド州にある都市で合衆国東海岸にあります。合衆国中東部にあるシンシナティからは大きく離れています。

・食堂車でハム＆エッグの食事をしているうちに、カロライナを通るそうなのですが、

これはノースカロライナ州やサウスカロライナ州のことで、アラバマ州のカロライナではないでしょう。
これはチャタヌーガのあるテネシー州の東側の州です。

eight to the bar というのは1小節を8つに刻む、つまり8ビートを刻むことになるのなら、

・汽笛が8ビートを刻みだしたらテネシーはもうすぐですよ

と言う事なら、このあたりで汽車は大きく方向を西に変えることになります。

あれっ？シンシナティ - チャタヌーガ間の鉄路とどこで合流するんだろう？

これは東京から大阪へ、東海道線を使わずに、北海道の札幌から日本海側を通って北陸本線回りで行くようなものかもしれません（汗）

この歌を歌っている人や演奏している人はこの汽車に乗ったことがあるのかしら？

ルート66よりも、かなりいい加減な歌詞かもしれません（笑）

この曲はミルドレッド・ベイリーの歌唱だけで知られている曲だそうです。

後にはJoe Williams が録音したことがあるそうなのですが、調べ切れませんでした。

数多くあるハリー・ウォーレンの曲の中から、スザンナがこの曲を選んだ理由はよくわかりません。
