1939年生まれという大ヴェテランながら、現在も活躍を続けているメアリ・ストーリングス（スターリングス表記が多いのですが…）が、2019年にリリースしたアルバム Songs Were Made to Sing があまりにも素晴らしく、大きな評判になっていて、USのラジオからもよく流れてきます。
『現代の歌姫たち』として取り上げたい人は大勢いるのですが、ご年齢を考慮して、そろそろ取り上げておくべきだろうと考えました。
どちらかというと日本では知名度が低い方なのですが、皆さんにぜひ知っておいていただきたい人です。
彼女は1960年代から音楽活動を続けてきているのですが、1970年代、1980年代にかけてレコーディングに恵まれなかった時期がありました。しかし1990年代からレコーディング活動が再開され、これまで多くのアルバムを出してきています。

Songs Were Made To Sing, is the latest and richest manifestation of that life in jazz, with dongs that reflect on the passions and heartbreaks of youth as well as the wisdom and rewards of experience. Not one of the lyrics on the album was written by Stallings, but each one represents a chapter in her life and a piece of her soul. The incomparable singer puts her distinctive stamps on each of these 13 classics, using her gift for interpreting a lyric to transform familiar melodies int profoundly personal and captivating stories.
