1958年ごろから映画音楽を手がけるようになり、 I Want to Live! (1958) 『私は死にたくない』ではグラミー賞にノミネートされました。
このあたりから彼の映画音楽での活動が盛んになります。

"Cinnamon and Clove"

この曲はジョニー・マンデルが1967年にブラジルに楽旅した後に書いたもので、リオのブラジル音楽にインスパイアーされたもののようです。
1967年に Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 の録音が大ヒットしました。

ニッキと丁字の香りが空気中に満ち満ちて…という歌詞がついているのですが、この意味がよくわかっていません ^^;

ソロは Sharel Cassity (as) です。

スタン・ゲッツを追従するアメリカのテナーハリー・アレンと、流暢なスウェーデンのピアニスト、ヤン・ラングレン。
2014年7月のコペンハーゲン・ジャズ・フェスティバルに出演したアレンとラングレンのカルテットが、フェスティバル期間中に録音したジョニー・マンデルのソングブックが"Quietly There"
です。

若手を代表するようなラングレンの流れるようなメロディラインの中を、ベテランの域に入りかけているアレンの艶の有るテナーが絡みます。

このジャケットにはどこかで見覚えがあるなぁと思っていましたら【いろいろなソングブック・アルバム】　#205 で掘り起こしながら、リストに加えていなかったという失敗をしていました。

なかなか素敵なアルバムですね。
ハリー・アレンはソングブック・アルバムを結構多数出していて【ハリー・アレンが手がけたソングブック】というトピができそうなくらいありますね。

『人』からの切り口のソングブック・トピックというのも考えられそうです。

とはいえ、わたしはこの人のアルバムをまだ持っていません。
音源が全部揃えばできるのでしょうが…

この映画の音楽は、最初はアンドレ・プレヴィンに作曲が依頼されたのですが、スケジュール的に彼の都合がつかず、ジョニー・マンデルにお鉢が回ってきたそうです。
ジョニー・マンデルにとっては、幸運なことに、スーザン・ヘイワード演じるバーバラ・グラームの役柄がジェリー・マリガンのファンだったことだそうです。

映画音楽にはジェリー・マリガンの演奏が使われています。

この曲は1950年代初頭にタイニー・カーンが作曲したものなのですが、ジョニー・マンデルは1955年に Cy Touff のアルバム Keester Parade (Easter Parade ではありません）のために編曲したそうです。

タイニー・カーン自身の編曲は、翌年、1956年に Elliot Lawernce 楽団が録音したそうです。

ジョエル・Ｅ・シーゲルというプロデューサー、作詞家が1982年から1983年にかけて The Great American Songwriters という企画で行ったコンサート・シリーズでの録音の一つです。

隠れた名曲の一つになるのかもしれません。
なぜか？！歌詞が載っているサイトが見当たりませんでしたが、和訳は見つけましたので貼り付けて起きます。（コーラス部だけになります）

しかし、ニッキと丁子の香りに満たされるとはどんな環境なのか、何がいいのか、いまだによくわかりません。
製菓工場の近くではこんな香りがあるのかもしれませんが…

バーグマン夫妻の、解釈に頭をひねっても、いまだにわからない詞です（汗）

歌詞の和訳があります。
前半は外国人の手による自動翻訳(?)でひどい例、後半は日本人の手による、かなり良くできた翻訳です。

なかなかいい曲で、多くの人たちが手掛けています。

スー・レイニーは快調にスイングしています。
ボブ・フローレンス (p) が突っ込んでくるおかずがいいですね。
