[Verse 1]
Suzanne takes you down to her place by the river
You can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night forever
And you know that she's half crazy that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China
And just when you want to tell her that you have no love to give her
She gets you on her wavelength and lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
[Chorus]
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you think you'll maybe trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind
[Verse 2]
And Jesus was a sailor when He walked upon the water
And He spent a long time watching from a lonely wooden tower
And when He knew for certain only drowning men could see Him
He said, "All men shall be sailors then until the sea shall free them"
But He Himself was broken long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
[Chorus]
And you want to travel with Him
And you want to travel blind
And you think you'll maybe trust Him
For He's touched your perfect body with His mind
[Verse 3]
Suzanne takes you down to her place by the river
You can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night forever
And the sun pours down like honey on our lady of the harbor
And she shows you where to look amid the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed, there are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love, and they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
[Chorus]
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you trust her
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind

My extraordinary sister, Lynn, initially inspired those lyrics -- particulaly the first line -- and it's pretty much my impression of her. But also in the mix is the personality change that happens to women when we find that perfect pair of sexy shoes. We put them on and -- WHAM! -- You can't tell us nothin'. Unh, unh, unh.
My father, Lester, considered himself an "architect of the human spirit". After his death, we found among his papers many poems. One was entitled "The South is Mine" and contained fervent expressions of his love for the south and reasons why he never moved north. He insisted on staying in the south -- in the face of degradation, humiliation and peril to his on safety and livelihood to desegregate lunch counters and fight for civil rights. I wrote this to express my own love for the south and, as a not to his late-discovered artistry, gave it the same title.
Broken wings, broken homes... missing feathers, missing fathers. This could be my autobiography, or it could be yours. But I do know one immutable truth: Pain + Wisdom = Beauty
So painful to sing. Such heartbreak on the faces of women in the audience when I sing it. Once upon a time, all I did was wish. But to wish is to relinquish my power to a force not my own.
Today, there is no "wish", there is only "do".
How does one extricate oneself from an unpleasant situation without getting hurt or hurting others?
The first line of this song came to me early one morning before I could even put my feet on the floor. By noon, the song was complete. This one makes me cry. I don't ask why anymore...
[Verse 1: John Lennon]
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
[Verse 2: John Lennon]
You know I work all day
To get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you say
You're gonna give me everything
So why on earth should I moan
'Cause when I get you alone
You know I feel okay
[Bridge: Paul McCartney]
When I'm home, everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight
Tight, yeah!
[Verse 1: John Lennon]
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
Ah!
[Verse 3: John Lennon]
So why on earth should I moan
'Cause when I get you alone
You know I feel okay
[Bridge: Paul McCartney]
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight
Tight, yeah!
[Verse 1: John Lennon]
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
[Outro: John Lennon]
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright
We laughed with ease
We skinned our knees
Picking sour apples from an old apple tree
We waved away bees
And did as we pleased
Many years ago
Few cars were there to pollute the air
In a small town like us
You could walk anywhere
No burdens to bear
We have to care
Many years ago
Many years ago
Do you remember the glass candy case
At Miss Cayce's store?
And do you remember the loud hard bang
Of that old screen door?
Do you remember the splinters we got
Of the old oak floor?
The playground in back
The railroad track?
And the family that lived next door?
On Falmouth Street life was sweet
We ran around outside
In our little brown feet
Playing hide and go seek
Every day of the week
Every day of the week
Many years ago
And the berries were good
Deep in the wood
We tried not to eat them as hard as we could
When mama sent us to pick them we knew that you would
Many years ago
Many years ago
Do you remember catching lightning bugs
In the front yard?
And do you remember the grown ups in the the living room
drinking and playing cards?
I know you remember, remember trying to be good
'that was hard.
The peach tree outside and the summer hayride
And being afraid of the dark
And then one day we moved away
The sadness I felt is hard to convey
But something inside me died that day
Many many many years ago
By my late 20's/early 30's, I had been a wife and mother for 10 years and was unhappily constrained by the those roles. There were certain things a woman just didn't do or dare to dream once she started down that path. The little girl inside begged me to write this song then. I did, but never performed it in public until November 2003...
you run — and in your running you fall
and in your falling you cry and feel so small
yeah, but then you stand — and in your standing you dance
and in your dancing you give yourself one more chance
so close your eyes
and let the wind from a thousand skies
carry you away and set you down on foreign ground
so you can run…
you live — and in your living you ache
and in your aching you bend until you damn near break
yeah, but then you rise — and in your rising you grow
and in your growing you see the way you need to go
so go on and close your eyes
and let the stars from a million skies
shine on you in your darkest hour and give you power to run… you better run!
why don’t you run?
This paean was written for my mother, Daisy, several years ago when she retired. I was never really satisfied with the melody, though, so last year, I incorporated musical influences from other cultures int it. The change to a minor key and change in rhythm imbued it with even more audacity -- to match mo mother's spirit! I feel very powerful and grateful each time I sing this. My mother is the strongest woman I know and I am her daughter.

I was dancing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see
I Introduced her to my loved one and while they were dancing
My friend stole my sweetheart from me
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have lost
Yes, I lost my little darling on the night they were playing
The beautiful Tennessee Waltz

My skin is black
My arms are long
My hair is woolly
My back is strong
Strong enough to take the pain
Inflicted again and again
What do they call me?
My name is Aunt Sarah
My name is Aunt Sarah
Aunt Sarah
My skin is yellow
My hair is long
Between two worlds
I do belong
But my father was rich and white
He forced my mother late one night
And what do they call me?
My name is Saffronia
My name is Saffronia
My skin is tan
My hair is fine
My hips invite you
My mouth like wine
Whose little girl am I?
Anyone who has money to buy
What do they call me?
My name is Sweet Thing
My name is Sweet Thing
My skin is brown
My manner is tough
I'll kill the first mother I see!
My life has been rough
I'm awfully bitter these days
Because my parents were slaves
What do they call me?
My name is Peaches!

[Verse 1]
When a bee lies sleepin'
In the palm of your hand
You're bewitched and deep in
Love's long looked after land
Where you'll see a sun up sky
In the morning dew
And where the days go laughing by
When love comes calling on you
Sleep on, bee, don't waken
Can't believe what just passed
He's mine for the takin'
I am so happy at last
Maybe I dream but he seems sweet
Golden as a crown
A sleepin' bee done told me
I'll walk with my feet off the ground
When my one true love I have found
[Instrumental break]
[Verse 2]
Sleep on, bee, don't waken
Can't believe what just passed
He's mine for the takin'
I am so happy at last
Maybe I dream but he seems sweet
Golden as a crown
A sleepin' bee done told me
When I walk with my feet off the ground
When my one true love I have found
[Verse 1]
My life goes on in endless song
Above earth's lamentations
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation
[Verse 2]
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it's music ringing
It sounds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing?
[Verse 3]
What though the tempest loudly roars?
I hear the truth, it liveth
What though the darkness 'round me grows?
Songs in the night it giveth
[Verse 4]
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
[Verse 5]
When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?
[Verse 6]
In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?
