レイ・チャールスは1950年代に音楽活動に入っています。
当初のころはナット・キング・コールの物まねをしていたのですが、彼自身の音楽にブルース、R&B、ゴスペルの要素を取り込み自分のスタイルを築きあげました。
さらに1960年代にはカントリー・ミュージックの曲を取り込んだ"I can't stop loving you"が世界的大ヒットになりました。
自身はピアノを演奏しながら歌うスタイルで、時にはサックスも演奏し、録音が残っています。
彼自身が幼少期をジョージア州で過ごしたのですが、ホーギー・カーマイケルが書いた名曲"Georgia on My Mind" を1960年にリバイバル大ヒットさせ、その後いろいろな経過の後、ジョージア州の州歌になっています。
