このアルバムのライナーノーツでヴァネッサは次のように語っています。
I've been living with the thought of doing a tribute to Carmen McRae for some time.
I've read a lot about her and obtains bits and pieces of information about her from
musicians who have known or worked with her.
Most of all, I've listened to her work a great deal over many years.
She is one of my earliest influences.
I wanted to be careful to maintain my own identity and style on this project.
I didn't want "do" Carmen McRae.
I wanted to do this tribute "for" Caamen Mcrae.
It is my way of expressing appreciation to her for all the gifts she has given over the years
and for what she represents to me.
このアルバムのタイトルにもなっていて、ヴァネッサはカーメンのことを"I'm Glad There Is You"と語りかけているようにも聞こえます。
In this world of ordinary people, extraordinary people
I'm glad there is you
In this world of overrated pleasures, of underrated treasures
I'm so glad there is you
I live to love, I'll love to live with you beside me
This role so new I'll muddle through with you to guide me
In this world where very many play at love
And hardly any stay in love
I'm glad there is you
More than ever I'm glad there is you
I live to love, I'll love to live with you beside me
This role so new I'll muddle through with you to guide me
Your lips were like a red and ruby chalice, warmer than the summer night
The clouds were like an alabaster palace, rising to a snowy height
Each star its own aurora borealis, suddenly you held me tight
I could see the midnight sun
I can't explain the silver rain that found me or was that a moonlit veil?
The music of the universe around me or was that a nightingale?
And then your arms miraculously found me, suddenly the sky turned pale
I could see the midnight sun
Was there such a night, it's a thrill I still don't quite believe
But after you were gone, there was still some stardust on my sleeve
The flame of it may dwindle to an ember and the stars forget to shine
And we may see the meadow in December, icy white and crystalline
But oh, my darling always I'll remember when your lips were close to mine
And we saw the midnight sun

美しい曲です。
ヴァネッサの流れるような歌唱がうっとりとさせてくれますね。
Inside a silent tear, I have a silent dream
That sometimes sails across the patterns of my mind.
The silence follows me and dreams just disappear
and then I find myself inside a silent tear
Sometimes I laugh too much to lose the loneliness.
I'm not the laughing kind. I can't say anything I really want to say.
I guess I try so hard I stumble on the way.
I'm always finding love when it's not meant to be.
What is reality and can it be defined?
When you're a fool like me it's never really clear
so you have silent dreams inside a silent tear.
I'm always finding love when it's not meant to be.
What is reality and can it be defined?
When you're a fool like me it's never really clear
so you have silent dreams inside a silent tear.
My original contribution to this tribute. "NO STRINGS ATTACHED" is an example of one type of song I've enjoyed listening to her perform over the years - love songs with a bittersweet irony or double entendre - a blend of cynicism about love and life.
What's it all about, Alfie
Is it just for the moment we live
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind
And if only fools are kind, Alfie
Then I guess it's wise to be cruel
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie
What will you lend on an old golden rule
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie
I know there's something much more
Something even non-believers can believe in
I believe in love, Alfie
Without true love we just exist, Alfie
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie
When you walk let your heart lead the way
And you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie
Speak low when you speak, love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we're swept apart, too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go
That tomorrow is near, tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon
Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon
Speak low
Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here, at last, on the ground
You in mid-air
Send in the clowns
Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around
One who can't move
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns
Just when I'd stopped opening doors
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours
Making my entrance again with my usual flair
Sure of my lines
No one is there
Don't you love farce?
My fault, I fear
I thought that you'd want what I want
Sorry, my dear
But where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns
Quick, send in the clowns
What a surprise!
Who could foresee?
I'd come to feel about you
What you felt about me
Why only now, when I see
That you've drifted away?
What a surprise
What a cliche
Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer?
Losing my timing this late in my career
And where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns

キャロルのスインギーな歌唱に続く Michael Moore (b) のソロがなかなかいいですね。
What can I say dear after I say I'm sorry,
What can I do to prove it to you that I'm sorry,
I didn't mean to ever be mean to you-oo
If I didn't care I wouldn't feel like I do,
I was all wrong,
but right or wrong I don't blame you
Why should I take somebody like you and shame you
I know that I made you cry and I'm so sorry dear
So what can I say dear after I say I'm sorry,
Tell me Baby what can I say dear after I say I'm sorry so-so sorry
what can I do to prove it to you I'm sorry
Oh I didn't mean to ever be mean to you
If I didn't care I wouldn't feel -oh I wouldn't feel like I do-do-do
I was all wrong, but right or wrong I don't blame you no-no-no-no
why should I take somebody like you and shame you
I know that I made you cry and I'm so sorry dear,
sorry I made you cry
oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo
sorry I made you cry
If the moon turns green
And shadows get up and walk around
Clouds come tumbling to the ground
I wouldn't be surprised
As didn't you fall in love with me
If the stars turn blue
And willows that weep began to sing
Winter changes into spring
I wouldn't raise my eyes
'Cause didn't you fall in love with me
I thought I was foolish to think of romance
With someone as charming as you
I thought I was hoping without any chance
Then every hope came true
If the moon turns green
And rivers began to flow upstream
This is all a crazy dream
I wouldn't be surprised
Anything can happen
If you can fall in love with me
I thought I was foolish to think of romance
With someone as charming as you
I thought I was hoping without any chance
Then every hope came true
If the moon turns green
And rivers began to flow upstream
This is all a crazy dream
I wouldn't be surprised
'Cause anything can happen
If you can fall in love with me
I'm blue every Monday
Thinkin' over Sunday
That one day when I'm with you
It seems that I sigh all day Tuesday
I cry all day Wednesday
Oh my, how I long for you
And then comes Thursday
Gee, it's long, it never gets by
And Friday makes me feel
Just like I'm gonna die
But after pay day, is my fun day
I shine all day Sunday
That one day when I'm with you
And then comes Thursday
Gee, it's long, it never goes by
And Friday makes me feel
Like I'm gonna die
But after pay day, is my fun day
I shine all day Sunday
That one day when I'm with you
That one day
It's a fun day
Sunday is my day with you
Supper time
I should set the table
'Cause it's supper time
Somehow I'm not able
'Cause that man o'mine
Ain't comin' home no more
Supper time
Kids will soon be yellin'
For their supper time
How'll I keep from tellin'
Them that man o'mine
Ain't comin' home no more?
How'll I keep explainin' when they ask me where he's gone?
How'll I keep from cryin' when I bring their supper on?
How can I remind them to pray at their humble board?
How can I be thankful when they start to thank the Lord?
Lord!
Supper time
I should set the table
'Cause it's supper time
Somehow I'm not able
'Cause that man o'mine
Ain't comin' home no more

Cloudy morning, dark as night
Tops of buildings, lost from sight
Sign of spring was nowhere to be seen
The trees in Central Park were anything but green
And then that cloudy morning slowly cleared
Tops of buildings reappear
Then suddenly I saw you come my way
And I knew that this would be a lovely day
And then that cloudy morning slowly cleared
Tops of buildings reappear
Then suddenly I saw you come my way
And I knew that this would be a lovely day
That day in Central Park
That cloudy morning
Then it suddenly cleared
Then you appeared
When autumn sings her lullaby
And green leaves turn to gold
Then I remember last September
You and I said goodbye
Whispering that we would be returning
When autumn comes again
Now autumn roams the hills once more
But you forgot your vow
Now here am I with, alone with only memories
Only lonely memories, autumn memories of you
[Chorus]
Love, when the leaves are turning
I get a hungry yearning for your arms
Love, when a heart is so blue
It shadows bright October's golden charm
The flaming moon reminds me of
The night of love that we once knew
Each tiny star is but a prayer
That when it's fall again, love will call again
And you'll be beside me to make
My autumn dreams come true
[Chorus]
The flaming moon reminds me of
The night of love that we once knew
Each tiny star is but a prayer
That when it's fall again, love will call again
And you'll be beside me to make
My autumn dreams come true

ハロルド・アーレン&ジョニー・マーサーのコンビが書いた大スタンダード曲ですね。
このトラックは、導入部のピアノが面白い編曲になっています。
That old black magic has me in its spell
That old black magic that you weave so well
Those icy fingers up and down my spine
The same old witchcraft when your eyes meet mine
The same old tingle that I feel inside
And then that elevator starts its ride
And down and down I go, round and round I go
Like a leaf that's caught in the tide
I should stay away but what can I do?
I hear your name and I'm aflame
Aflame with such a burning desire
That only your kiss can put out the fire
'Cause you are the lover I have waited for
The mate that fate had me created for
And every time your lips meet mine
Darling, down and down I go, round and round I go
In a spin, loving the spin that I'm in
Under that old black magic called love
Someday we'll build a home on a hilltop high
You and I
Shiny and new a cottage that two can fill
And we'll be pleased to be called
"The folks who live on the hill"
Someday we may be adding a wing or two
A thing or two
We will make changes as any fam'ly will
But we will always be called
"The folks who live on the hill"
Our veranda will command a view of meadows green
The sort of view that seems to want to be seen
And when the kids grow up and leave us
We'll sit and look at the same old view
Just we two
Darby and Joan who used to be Jack and Jill
The folks who like to be called
What they have always been called
"The folks who live on the hill"
Here's something that I'd like to bring to you
Wrapped all in cellophane, designed for you
Tell you what it's all about
It is without a doubt
Swing in the latest style
Service with a smile
If you want to swing and shout
Get your heels and get about
I'm an errand girl for rhythm, send me
Just get hip and follow through
I'll deliver straight to you
I'm an errand girl for rhythm, send me
You can always find me down at Smokey Joe's
That's where all the hip and groovy people go
If you want variety, take a tip and call for me
I'm an errand girl for rhythm, send me
You can always find me down at Smokey Joe's
That's where all the smart and swinging people go
If you want variety, take a tip and call on me
I'm an errand girl for rhythm
I'm an errand girl for rhythm, send me
