このジミー・マクヒュー・ソングブックには、彼の書いた最も有名な曲
"I'm in the mood for love"

は入っていません。

しかし、収録曲を眺めると、ああっ、あの曲も、あの曲も、ジミー・マクヒューが書いた曲だったのかっ！と気がつかれる事でしょう。

あっ、ジョニー・マーサーが詞を書いた曲もあります。

1920年代から活躍を続けた大作曲家の一人として、ジミー・マクヒューがいたということを忘れないでください。

この曲は非常によく知られたスタンダード曲ですね。
フランク・レッサーとのコンビで書いた曲ですが、曲と詞を完全分業にしたものではないだろうと想像しています。
この有名曲は、フランク・レッサーのソングブックとよくかぶります ^^;


『ずらかろうよ』という意味の曲名です。
（みなさんもこの"Let's Get Lost"という表現を使ってみませんか）

非常に素直な声で、素直にスイングするウエスラですね。

（情報を探し出せませんでした）

スタンダード曲になっており、何度かリバイバルヒットもしています。
1948年にはナット・キング・コールが、1961年にはエヴァリー・ブラザーズが等々あります。
また、ジミー・マクヒューが書いたミュージカル Sugar Babies (1979) でも使われています。

ウェスラ・ウィットフィールドは丁寧にヴァースから歌っているのですが、ヴァースの歌詞を探し出せていません ^^;

スタンダード曲になっていて、多くの人たちが手がけています。
ジョン・コルトレーンのアルバム Ballads にも入っていました。

ウェスラ・ウィットフィールドは丁寧に歌っています。
このあたりに来ると、彼女の歌唱の特徴が判ってきますね :-)

なかなか素敵な曲です。

歌詞も見当たりませんでした。

しかしきれいな曲ですね。

どうやらコットンクラブのレビューで使われた曲のようです。

この曲はLew Leslie's International Revue で使われました。

ジミー・マクヒューとドロシー・フィールズの名コンビによる最大のヒット曲かもしれません。

実は、本当の作曲者はファッツ・ウォーラーで、彼がお金のために曲を売ってしまったという説もあります。

みなさんよくご存知の大スタンダード曲ですね。
1930年というと、前年から始まった米国大恐慌の真っ最中、不景気で沈んだ世の中を、せめて明るい歌で吹っ飛ばそうというような歌になっています。

また、1930年にはロック・フェラーは大金持ちとして知られていたのですね。
石油王のロックフェラーは1870年にスタンダード・オイルを創業したとなっています。
また、現在のシティ・グループにつながるナショナル・シティー銀行ニューヨークを創業しています。
その他、鉱山、鉄道等多角経営で一台財閥になっています。

ウェスラ・ウィットフィールドはヴァースから、心をこめて歌っています。

この曲は1935 RKO-Radio movie に使われたとなっているのですが、データを探し出せませんでした。
ファッツ・ウォーラーも出演していたそうです。

同名異曲に Harold Arlen / Leo Robin (1948) のものがあるのですが、ハロルド・アーレンの曲のほうがよく知られているかもしれません。

なかなか軽快な曲です。

なんだかオムニバスアルバムのように見えるこのアルバムですが、テレンス・ブランチャードの器楽演奏が4トラック、そしてゲストとして、間違いなく【現代の歌姫たち】4人、ダイアン・クラール、ジェイン・モンハイト、ダイアン・リーヴス、カッサンドラ・ウィルソンがそれぞれ 1-2 トラック入っています。

このアルバムを考えて見ますと、テレンス・ブランチャードの器楽演奏だけでは成り立ったろうか、歌姫が一人だけでは、その歌姫のアルバムになってしまわなかっただろうか、というあたりで、複数の歌姫を起用して、かろうじてテレンス・ブランチャードのアルバムを名乗れるようにしたのではないか、というような印象を受けます。

テレンス・ブランチャードはブラウニー系の音色で、演奏技術も巧みで、とくにこのアルバムでは歌に絡むおかずの入れ方には見るべきものがあります。
しかし、彼の器楽演奏のトラックを聴くと、どきどきするような戦慄感が伝わってこないのです。
一つはその演奏スタイルで、ブッカー・アーヴィン(ts)のリップグリスを多用するスタイルをトランペットで実現しようとしているかに見える音の出し方にあるように思えます。
もう一つは、フリー・インプロヴィゼイションに華を感じるところが少ないように思えます。

有名どころの【現代の歌姫たち】を起用することで、テレンス・ブランチャードのアルバムとしての輝きが、歌姫たちの輝きで覆い隠されてしまったような印象を受けます。

テレンス・ブランチャードはアート・ブレイキーに見出され、アート・ブレイキー楽団で初来日しています。
このときは３管編成 (ts, as, tp) で、その中でも一番真っ当な演奏を聴かせてくれました。
アート・ブレイキー楽団が来日すると、日本のファン向けのサーヴィスで "Moanin', & Blues March"を演奏するのですが、結構乗り乗りの演奏を聴かせてくれました。
少し小柄で、まん丸な眼鏡をかけていて、少年ぽい印象を受けたのですが、眼鏡を外すとこのアルバムのジャケットのような目付きになるんですね。

非常に現金だと思われるのは、youtube にはこのアルバムから歌唱の入ったトラックはあるのですが、演奏だけのトラックは上がっていません ^^;

まあ、このトラックを聴いて、この曲の、すばらしい、心に残る演奏と感じるかどうかはみなさん次第なのですが…

時は1930年、1929年から始まったディプレッションの直後に書かれた曲で、不景気な世の中を吹き飛ばすような明るい曲として大ヒットしました。

#18 に書いていますように、複数のすばらしい歌姫を起用したテレンス・ブランチャードのアルバムなのですが、聴くものにとっては不完全燃焼を感じさせてくれるところがある内容に仕上がっています。

これは、ひとえに彼の演奏スタイルにあるように思えるのですが、これが一人の歌姫だけのアルバムで、伴奏をテレンスが努めているのならまだ納得できたかもしれません。


ジミー・マクヒューのソングブックは、もう少し掘り出してありますので、リソースをお持ちの方がいらっしゃいましたら、ぜひご紹介ください。
