最近のヴォーカル・アルバムの中にジョニ・ミッチェルの曲を取り入れているものが目立ちます。
それぞれがジャズらしい歌唱になっていて、ジョニのことを殆ど知らないわたしには、一つのジャズ曲として聞こえるのですが、歌詞を見ると意味不明のものが多い！
かなり字余りになる歌詞もあるのですが、そこはジャズメン、上手く処理しています。
ジョニが音楽世界で非常に高く評価されている理由もよくわからないのですが、一流のジャズメンがこぞって取り上げるだけのものがあるのだろうと想像するしかありません。
このあたりを掘り下げるためにジョニのアルバムをわざわざ手に入れることもないだろうと思うし、元のジョニの歌唱を聴いてもそれほど心躍ることがないし、一種不思議な現象と見ていました。
彼女自身、チャールス・ミンガスやパット・メセニーの曲に詞をつけて歌ってもいます。
またハービー・ハンコックが "River: The Joni Letters" というジョニに捧げるアルバムを作っています。
さらに、最近ジョニ・ミッチェルのソングブックを発見してしまったのです。
そこで、この、私にはよくわからないジョニ・ミッチェルを、無謀にも、ソングブック シリーズで取り上げてみようという思いに至りました。

そのアルバムです。１枚３００円しないお値段だったので、何枚かはダブりますが即買でした。確か輸入盤限定のはずで、紙ジャケ見開き仕様はありがたい。
ただ、レコードのジャケットをＣＤサイズにそのまま縮小しているため、歌詞は虫眼鏡を使わないと読めません。歌詞に興味があれば、気に入ったものを国内盤で購入するのが無難でしょうね。
余談ながら、１０枚の中では『ドンファンのじゃじゃ馬娘』が私的ベスト。ジャコ・パストリアスとの呼吸もぴったりでジャコを楽しむならこちらがオススメ。当時隆盛を極めたフュージョンの荒波に呑まれることなく一歩も二歩も先に行っているサウンドが堪能できます。

どうも、ジョニの詞というのは、ジョニという大スターが居て、彼女のゴシップが世に知られていて、『あの時ジョニはこう思っていたのね』ということが野次馬にわかる、いや、わからせるためのものという位置づけではないかと思えてきます。
ファンというか野次馬は、このときの歌を聞いて『キャーっ、そうだったのねっ！』と野次馬心を満たされる仕掛けになっているのではないかと思えます。
（世にゴシップ好きは多いのです！──笑）
で、この大スターもゴシップも何も知らない人間にとっては意味不明のものになるということかもしれないなぁと思えてきます。
ローリーはかなり丁寧に歌っていますね :-)
演奏のほうもなかなかいいですね。

たしかにジャギーなジャンルで取り上げられるのは少ないかもしれませんね。
しかし、彼女が最も輝いていた1960年代後半のフォーク&ロックの世界では彼女自身の歌うメロディーラインはとてもジャズっぽいなどと言われていました。
1969年の8月にニューヨーク郊外の農場地帯ウッドストックで大規模なロックフェスティバルが開かれました。
予想外45万人の聴衆が集まってしまったため、途中からフリーフェスにしたという3日間の祭典です。
これが1年後に映画となり…時代ですね、まだVTRなど家庭に無い時代ですから映画となり日本でも公開されました。
スター的な順番ではジミ・ヘンドリックスあたりがトップでしたが「Crosby,Stills,Nash &Young」というスーパーユニットがいちばんブレークしたのでした。
当時、ジョニはスティーヴン・スティルスと恋仲と言われており、彼女はテレビ出演がありフェスには参加しなかったのですがスティルスから話を聞き、書いた詞が「ウッドストック」となり、作曲はスティルスで、この映画の主題歌ともなったのでした。

クリスマス時期にフロリダだかカリフォルニアだか、暖かいところにツアーに出て、凍っている川でスケートをしたい、スケートで逃げ出したいという不満を訴えているのでしょうか。
さらに、金儲けのためのツアーだと、ファンをないがしろにするフレーズすらあります。
寒いところに男がいるのなら、ツアーが終わってから、寒いところへ行って、凍った川でスケートすればいいことだろうに…
歌詞の意味はある程度わかっても、共感できる内容ではないですね :-(
ジョニにはいくつかのゴシップがあるのだろうとは感じていましたが、『恋多き女』といわれるほどだったのですね。
日本人的感覚では、ジョニはそんなに美人とはいえな……あっ、石を投げないで！

しかし、ソングブック・アルバムが作られるぐらい、ジョニは人口に膾炙したシンガー=ソングライターなのでしょうね。
