Love is inconvenient, it's a sin I should avoid
I've been trampled down by romance
I've been hurt, I've been annoyed
Please give me a reason to jump deep into the void
Convince me I should fall in love with you
Passion is a distraction or the fraction of the cause
Just because there is an attraction
Does it mean the stars are crossed
Look into my eyes before my common sense is lost
Convince me I should fall in love with you
Too chaotic, too hypnotic
An exotic silent raise
You're insisting, I'm resisting
How I'll survive your next embrace?
Love is too quick, sadic and erotic treasure chest
Perhaps I should leave town
And give my heart a new address
I could simply kiss you, put my judgment to the test
Convince me I should fall in love with you
Love is too quick, sadic and erotic treasure chest
Perhaps I should leave town
And give my heart a new address
I could simply kiss you, put my judgment to the test
Convince me I should fall in love with you
Convince me I should fall in love with you
Convince me I should fall in love with you
When I was young I lived in a world of dreams
Of moods and myths and illusionary schemes
Though now I'm much more grown up
I fear that I must own up
To the fact that I'm in doubt of
What the modern cynics shout of
They say it's spring
This feeling light as a feather
They say this thing
This magic we share together
Came with the weather too
They say it's May
That's made me daft as a daisy
It's May, they say
That gave the whole world this crazy
Heavenly, hazy hue
I'm a lark
On the wing
I'm the spark of a firefly's fling
Yet to me
This must be
Something more than a seasonal thing
Could it be spring
Those bells that I can hear ringing
It may be spring
But when the robins stop singing
You're what I'm clinging to
Though they say it's spring
It's you
If poets sing
That when a heart's sympathetic
It's merely spring
Then poets plights are pathetic
Though I'm poetic too
They say it's spring
For lovers, there's where the lure is
That evil thing
For which September the cure is
This, they are sure is true
Though I know
That it's so
That my fancy may turn in the spring
With the right
One in sight
One can find a perpetual thing
Did I need spring
To bring the ring that you bought me
Though it was spring
That wondrous day that you caught me
Darling I thought we knew
That it wasn't spring
'Twas you

Don't mind the rain drops
Wait till the rain stops
Smile through your tears, laughing at life
No road is lonely, if you will only
Lose all your blues laughing at life
Live for tomorrow, be happy today
Laugh all your sorrows away
Start now and cheer up
The skies will clear up
Lose all your blues laughing at life
Don't mind the rain drops
Wait till the rain stops
You'll find the sun laughing at life
No road is lonely, if you will only
Smile through your tears, laugh at life
Live for tomorrow, be happy today
Laugh all your sorrows away
Start now and cheer up
The skies will clear up
Lose all your blues laughing at life

Let the river rock you like a cradle
Climb to the treetops, child, if you’re able
Let your hands tie a knot across the table.
Come and touch the things you cannot feel.
And close your fingertips and fly where I can’t hold you
Let the sun-rain fall and let the dewy clouds enfold you
And maybe you can sing to me the words I just told you,
If all the things you feel ain't what they seem.
And don’t mind me 'cos I ain't nothin' but a dream.
The mocking bird sings each different song
Each song has wings - they won’t stay long.
Do those who hear think he's doing wrong?
While the church bell tolls its one-note song
And the school bell is tinkling to the throng.
Come here where your ears cannot hear.
And close your eyes, child, and listen to what I’ll tell you
Follow in the darkest night the sounds that may impel you
And the song that I am singing may disturb or serve to quell you
If all the sounds you hear ain't what they seem,
Then don' mind me 'cos I ain't nothin' but a dream.
The rising smell of fresh-cut grass,
Smothered cities choke and yell with fuming gas;
I hold some grapes up to the sun
And their flavour breaks upon my tongue.
With eager tongues we taste our strife
And fill our lungs with seas of life.
Come taste and smell the waters of our time.
And close your lips, child, so softly I might kiss you,
Let your flower perfume out and let the winds caress you.
As I walk on through the garden, I am hoping I don’t miss you
If all the things you taste ain't what they seem,
Then don’t mind me ‘cos I ain't nothin' but a dream.
The sun and moon both are right,
And we’ll see them soon through days of night
But now silver leaves on mirrors bring delight.
And the colours of your eyes are fiery bright,
While darkness blinds the skies with all its light.
Come see where your eyes cannot see.
And close your eyes, child, and look at what I’ll show you;
Let your mind go reeling out and let the breezes blow you,
Then maybe, when we meet, suddenly I will know you.
If all the things you see ain't what they seem,
Then don’t mind me ‘cos I ain't nothin' but a dream .
And you can follow; And you can follow; follow…

Alan Pasqua (p)

Sometimes we walk hand in hand by the sea
And we breathe in the cool salty air,
You turn to me with a kiss in your eyes
And my heart feels a thrill beyond compare
Then your lips cling to mine, it's wonderful, wonderful
Oh, so wonderful my love.
Sometimes we stand on the top of a hill
And we gaze at the earth and the sky
I turn to you and you melt in my arms
There we are, darling, only you and I
What a moment to share, it's wonderful, wonderful
Oh, so wonderful my love
Sometimes we walk, hand in hand by the sea
And we breathe in the cool salty air.
You turn to me, with a kiss in your eyes
And my heart feels a thrill beyond compare.
Then your lips cling to mine, it's wonderful, wonderful
Oh, so wonderful, my love.
Sometimes we stand, on the top of a hill
And we gaze at the earth and the sky.
I turn to you, and you melt in my arms
Here we are, Darling, only you and I.
What a moment to share, it's wonderful, wonderful
Oh, so wonderful, my love.
The world is full of wondrous things, it's true
But they wouldn't have much meaning without you.
Some quiet evening, I sit by your side
And we're lost in a world of our own.
I feel the glow of your arms open love
I'm aware of the treasure that I hold.
And I say to myself "It's wonderful, wonderful
Oh, so wonderful, my love.'
And I say to myself "It's wonderful, wonderful
Oh, so wonderful, my love.'

Walt Fowler (tp)
I've got an island in the Pacific,
And everything about it is terrific;
I've got the sun to tan me,
Palms to fan me,
And - an occasional man!
I've got an island, it's very lazy,
If I should ever leave it I'd be crazy!
I've got papayas, peaches,
Sandy beaches,
And - an occasional man!
When I go swimmin',
I am always dressed in style,
'Cause I go swimmin'
Wearin' just a great big smile!
My little island was made for pleasure,
And in the cool of evening it's a treasure;
And when the hour grows later,
What is greater
Than - an occasional man!
If you're on shore leave
And your face is kinda cute,
Perhaps, by your leave,
I can be you passion fruit!
My little island is such a beauty.
You may forget to heed the call of duty;
But if you give the slip
To your ship,
Miss your trip,
Take a tip
And blame -
An occasional dame!

Bob Mintzer (ts)
If ever you're restless and feelin' low,
Don't think that the city is the place to go!
Well, I'll tell you one thing worth thinkin' about,
If you come in be sure you can get back out!
The great city's playboys, they're always around,
To help build your hopes up, then help drag you down!
They'll leave you with nothing worth singin' about,
'Cause when you're in it's so hard to get back out!
The great city, cold cruel stone!
Ten million people, and each one standin' alone!
You're caught in a whirlpool of east side cafes,
Where life is a cocktail of beads and berets!
And blues are the main things you're drinkin' about,
'Cause now you're in and now, now you won't back out!
'Cause now you're in and now, now you won't back out!
'Cause now you're in and now, now you won't back out!
Ray Gilbert

By the way
If you find a little tear
Just a simple little tear
Keep it, it belongs to me
Don't you see
Yesterday when you told me that you care
Then it fell, I don't know where
Far too thrilled, to see
And in that tear you'll find a memory
One that means so much to me
In a tender moment we found a love to share
So, my love,
Knowing you will understand,
If you find it on your hand
Keep it there keep it there
Its the last time for love
I swear by all stars in heaven above
You took my heart and now its breaking in two
I've been such a fool for you
Its the last time for bliss
I gave my soul for nothing less than a kiss
The things we planned are all so meaningless now
But I get along somehow
I thought that you were a dream beyond compare
But you have shown me I was wrong
Now that we're through
I have nothing left to spare
You've taken everything and left me just this song
Its the last time for love
I cross my heart and swear by stars up above
I've learnt my lesson but there's one thing that's true
My life starts and ends with you
I thought that you were a dream beyond compare
But you have shown me I was wrong
Now that we're through
I have nothing left to spare
You've taken everything and left me just this song
Its the last time for love
I cross my heart and swear by stars up above
I've learnt my lesson but there's one thing that's true
My life starts and ends with you
Café is a dream of a woman walking to meet her old lover. When she meets him, time stands still; and then, suddenly, as in all dreams, the moment ends and we are back to reality.
Sing low, Sing clear
Sweet words in my ear
Not a whisper of despair
But love's own prayer
Sing on, until
You bring back the thrill
Of a sentimental tune
That died too soon
Our harmony was lost
But you forgave, I forgot
Whisper not of quarrels past
You know we've had our last
So now, we'll be
On key constantly
Love will whisper on eternally
Why did we listen when they said it wouldn't last
Gossiping voices made us break up, but you know we still can make up
If we forget 'em all, and answer Cupid's call
It's the truth!
Whispers of troubles are an echo of the past
All it will take to lose my gloom is just a whisper not of rumours
But of your love for me
That's how it's got to be
I got a dream for the world
Peace in the rivers and everywhere
Bridges of steel and love and cities that smile
Gray empty faces walk by
And hands try to hide all the lonlieness
Lighting a cigarette to blow time away
Lost in the noise, lonely as a wind
People on sidewalks with no place to go
Can they learn to understand
The world of love that I'm dreaming
The world of love
And I, I said I got a sack full of dreams
Streets full of laughter and toy ballons
And people with hearts that care
Who listen for love wanting the same
Wanting to care wanting to share
All my dreams for the world
Can they learn to
Understand the world of love
That I'm dreaming
The world of love
Wanting the same
Wanting to care
Wanting to share
All my dreams for the world
Can they learn, can they learn
Can they learn to understand
The world of love peace, peace, happiness
Love and kindness
This is my sack full of dreams
Album Notes
When it was time to start work on this project, I set out to find modern jazz compositions by current-day songwriters that I feel deserve a place in the “new jazz standards” repertoire. Many artists have turned pop tunes into jazz, but my goal was to draw solely from composers in the jazz world.
The songs on "Crowded Heart" were composed by some of the finest jazz writers and performers on the scene today. By recording these newer, great jazz tunes, in some small way I’m doing my part to give them the wider exposure they deserve.
To quote jazz historian Ted Gioia (author of The Jazz Standards), “That’s how jazz stays alive and becomes more than a history lesson or museum piece.”
