わたしは彼のアルバム "A Love Supreme" は、それまでのファンのコルトレーン離れの原因になったアルバムだろうと考えています。
LP時代のことですが（CDになってからは知りません）アルバムジャケットにコルトレーンが書いたという詩とその和訳が印刷されていました。
読んでみてビックリというか非常に落胆したのは、その詩の稚拙さ加減、あのすばらしい演奏を展開してきたコルトレーンの頭の中はこの程度のものだったのか、という大きな失望を味わいました。
アルバムに針を落とすと、コルトレーンの演奏自体は、それまでの延長線上にあるのですが、突如全員で祝詞を上げるに及んでは、彼等が音楽から大きく逸脱して、似非宗教者になってしまったのか！と失望を通り越して、コルトレーンの音楽を聴いても感動できないようになってしまいました。
その後にでた彼のアルバムを聴いても、醒めた聴き方しかできなくなってしまったのです。
彼の宗教観は、古くは十字軍あたりから、現在のアルカイーダやISISまたはISILに共通する、底の浅い狂信者のものと変わりがないように思えました。
（余談ですが米国は最大の宗教国家のひとつです。大統領の宣誓式で彼が手を上においている書物は…）
ジャズメンに高度な宗教学を望むのは木に縁りて魚を求むことなのかもしれませんが、演奏の中で祝詞を上げ、アルバムジャケットに稚拙な詩を載せることは大きな失敗だったと考えています。
これまで長年ジャズを聴いてきた人も、今夢中になって聴いている人も、これからもっとたくさんのジャズを聴くことになるだろう人も、自分自身の耳で、自分自身の感性で、ジャズを聴き、自分自身の頭で演奏のすばらしさや良し悪しを判断してください。
決して音楽評論家がそういうんだからそうなんだろうと無条件に受け取るということは避けてください。

1957年、ニューヨークに移りソニー・ロリンズと共演。同時期にブルーノートと契約し、いわゆる「1500番台」のシリーズから、何枚かのリーダー・アルバムを発表。代表作として挙げられるのは、ジャッキー・マクリーン（サックス）やポール・チェンバース（ベース）等が参加した『クール・ストラッティン』（1958年）。とりわけ日本で人気が高く、ジャズ喫茶で頻繁に流された。しかし、本国アメリカではヒットに結びつかず、ブルーノートの創設者アルフレッド・ライオンは、日本から本作の注文が殺到したことを不思議に思ったという。
