リチャード・ロジャースソングブック・アルバムには、大きく３つの種類があるようです。
1. ロジャース&ハート・ソングブック
2. ロジャース&ハマーシュタイン・ソングブック
3. 上記両者も、他の作詞家も含むソングブック

彼は1919年にロレンツ・ハート (Lorenz Hart) と出会いました。
その後1943年にハートが亡くなるまで、二人のコンビで多くの仕事を手がけました。

ハートの没後、彼はオスカー・ハマースタイン2世 (Oscar Hammerstein II) とコンビを組みます。
このコンビの最初のヒット作はミュージカル（舞台）オクラホマ (Oklahoma!) (1943) でした。
コンビは1960年にハマースタイン２世が亡くなるまで多くの仕事を手がけました。

ハマースタイン２世の没後は、彼は自身で作詞も手がけました。
その後、スティーヴン・ソンドハイム (Stephen Sondheim), マーティン・チャーニン (Martin Charnin), シェルドン・ハーニック (Sheldon Harnick) とコンビを組みました。

リチャード・ロジャースは俗にEGOTと言われる Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony の全ての賞を受賞した、数少ない作曲家です。

ロジャース / ハマーシュタインのコンビでの最初の成功作オクラホマ (Oklahoma!)ですが、コニー・ウィリスのSF小説「リメイク」 (Remake : (1995)) の中で、この作品でミュージカルは終わった！という意味の評価がなされています。
興味のある方はご覧になってください。大森望訳、ハヤカワ文庫SF 。

しかし、このミュージカルが作られた1943年というのは第二次世界大戦の最中だったのですね！

サイアム（今のタイ）を舞台にした作品「王様と私」（The King and I (1951))ですが、以前、タイの人と交信したときにこのミュージカルを話題にしてみたのですが、タイの人は全く知らないようでした。

「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」（The Sound of Music,(1959)) はロジャース / ハマーシュタインのコンビでの最後の作品になりましたが、この中の多くの曲が日本でも親しまれていますね。

まあ相手の視点に立つと、相手に関心があるそぶりすら見せなかったので、それ以上こだわるだけの魅力をこの人に感じなかったのでしょう…あっ、石を投げないでください！

このアルバムはロレンツ・ハート、オスカー・ハマースタイン2世、そしてリチャード・ロジャース自身が作詞した曲が収録されています。

曲を聞いただけで誰が作詞した曲かが、このトピックをウォッチしてきた人にはわかるかもしれませんが、混乱するだけの人も多いでしょう :-)
数曲、せめて1曲でも作詞家の名前が出てくるようになれば、立派なリチャード・ロジャース・ファンと言えるかもしれません。

一流の演奏家たちを集めた録音で、ロージーの歌以外に、編曲やソロを楽しめるアルバムになっています。

最近たまにライブを聴きに行くことがあって、ヴォーカルの方が出演している場合もあるのですが、多くの場合は、何を歌っているのか、わたしの貧弱な英語力では聞き取れないことが多いのです。
残念なことです。
その点、ロージーの歌は、きれいな英語なのでしっかりと聞き取ることができます。
このあたりは日本人ヴォーカリストの方々によく考えてほしいなぁといつも思っています。
（ある日本人ミュージシャンに聞いた話では、日本人ヴォーカリストの中には英語を全然しゃべれない人がいるそうです…ほんとかしら？）

書き洩らしましたが、トーキー映画が出現したのは1927年のこと。
アル・ジョルソン主演の長編映画 The Jazz Singer が最初になります。
その3年後の映画なので、ハリウッドがどれだけトーキー映画に傾倒していったかが想像できますね。
この時代はミュージカル映画もたくさん作られ、作曲家や作詞家が大勢必要とされました。
いわば音楽が一つの新興産業でもあった時代になるのでしょう。
このあたりが欧州から移民してきた人たち（特にジューイッシュ）の才能が開花した時期にもなるのでしょうね。
