通好みの人アビー・リンカーンは歌手・ソングライター・俳優として活躍しました。

また彼女は1960年代の公民権運動の活動家でもありました。

アビー・リンカーンはジャズメンの曲に詞を書いたり、自身で作曲・作詞を手掛けた曲が多くあります。
それらの中でも "Throw It Away"は広くスタンダード曲として親しまれています。
また、セロニアス・モンクの曲 Blue Monk にアビーが歌詞をつけています。

"Throw It Away" アビーはこの曲を何度か録音しています。

彼女の歌唱スタイルはビリー・ホリデイの影響を強く受けたもので、円熟期あたりからの「放り投げる」ような歌唱は彼女独特のスタイルで、強く心惹かれるものがあります。

アビー・リンカーンが我々の前に現れたのは、マックス・ローチと録音した1960年のアルバム We Insist! が大きく取り上げられたあたりのことになります。
このアルバムは、当時、公民権運動で同志的結合状態にあったアビーとマックスが、自分たちの主張を込めたもので、大きな話題になりました。
歌詞はアビーが書いたものです。

アビーとマックスは1962年に結婚し、1970年まで続きました。
1973年（たぶん）にマックス・ローチが再来日し、同時期にアビー・リンカーンも来日していたのですが、公演の関係者は「アビーにはマックスが今来日していることを知らせるんじゃないぞ、殺し合いが始まるかもしれないから」と気を使っていたそうです。
同志的結合は破綻してしまうと、憎しみ合いも非常に強いものになるのですね ^^;

このアルバムのライナーノーツによりますと、この曲はマイルス・デイヴィスに向けて書かれた曲となっています。
アビー・リンカーンのアルバム You Gotta Pay the Band のライナーノーツにはこのあたりのことが書かれているかもしれません。
お持ちの方がいらっしゃいましたらご確認いただけませんでしょうか。

素晴らしいアルバムでしたね。

アビー・リンカーン・ソングブックはもう少しだけ発見できています。
その中で、Virginia Schenck は、彼女のアルバムの音源がYoutubeに1件も上がっていません。
かっては見かけたことがあるように思うのですが…
これはびょっとすると、彼女あるいは彼女の属するレコード会社のポリシーになるのかもしれないという一抹の不安があります。
もう少し様子を見るために、後回しにしてみます。
彼女のアビー・リンカーン・ソングブックもなかなか素晴らしいアルバムなのですが…

Wikipedia によりますと、アメリカン・インディアンの血を引く人だそうです。

ラン・ブレイクはピアニスト・作曲家として活動してきた人ですが、この人の演奏はマル・ウォルドロン以上に暗い音楽を演る人のようです。

この二人のコンビのアビー・リンカーン・トリビュートアルバムはもう一枚あるのですが入手困難のようです。

二人は、アビー・リンカーンの音楽をよく研究しているようで、それぞれのトラックはなかなかよくできているのですが、アルバム全体として聴くと、あまりにも暗すぎる感じを受けます。

通向けのアルバムになるのかもしれませんが、アビー・リンカーンを知る手掛かりにはなかなかよさそうなアルバムと思えます。

アルバム・ジャケットも非常に暗いものになっています（笑）

アビー・リンカーンはここまで暗かったかなぁ…
