I have a Nepalese friend named Bimala. She’s the wife of Mr. Khanal, and we’ve enjoyed tea together before.
I recently found out about a local "Mochi-pounding Event for Foreigners" happening this Saturday. Thinking it would be a great way for her to connect with the community, I invited her. We had made the plan a long time ago, so I sent her a LINE message yesterday just to check in, thinking she might have forgotten.
She replied with a voice message. She finds typing in Japanese difficult, but she speaks it well, so this is our usual style. When I played the message, her voice was strained with heavy coughing.
"I’m not feeling well... I really want to go, but I don’t think I can. Cough, cough..."
"Oh no, that’s terrible!" I replied. Since the event is a walk-in style with no reservation needed, I told her, "Please don't worry about it and just rest up. Let’s do tea again once you’re feeling better!"
But here’s the twist. Yesterday, I happened to bring "something" to work with me: some Nepalese candies that Bimala had given me as a souvenir a while back.
To be honest, I rarely eat candy unless I have a sore throat. It’s not that I dislike it; I just feel like it doesn't "fill the gap" when I'm a bit hungry. I feel the same about caramels or Hi-Chew—they just don't tempt me. So, the candies had been sitting at home for a while.
"I have enough of these, and they're rare, so I'll share them with everyone," I thought yesterday morning. I handed them out at the office, saying, "These are candies from Nepal!"
After giving them to everyone, I popped one into my own mouth.
"……GYAAAH!!"
It was so... "unique" that I almost spat it out. To put it bluntly: It was awful!
It was a candy, yet not sweet at all. On the contrary, it was incredibly spicy! And the aftertaste lingering in my nose was unmistakably... "hint of curry."
"Wow, everything really is curry-flavored in Nepal...!"
I felt a pang of regret for giving them to my colleagues. Everyone stayed silent, so I’m a bit worried if they’re okay...
Well, oh well! (lol)
