日本文学研究家にして翻訳家のスティーブン・スナイダー
は村上春樹の世界的知名度を分析している。

先ずは翻訳しやすい文体で書かれていること。
村上は米文学の翻訳家でもある。村上の作品は意識して
外国語に訳しやすいように書かれている。また、村上自身が
英語で書いたものを日本語にしているものもある。

次に、出版社、編集者を日本国内から世界へ拡大したことが
挙げられている。確かに講談社インターナショナルよりクノップ
の方が知名度が高いし、本の拡散度とスピードが違うだろう。

村上が先鞭をつけた出版戦略は他の作家にも影響を及ぼすと
スナイダーは考えている。

スナイダーは翻訳のしやすすさを念頭に置いている。
翻訳がすんなりと行かない作家として水村美苗を挙げている。
水村は「日本語で近代日本文学を書く小説家」として知られて
いるという。スナイダーが水村美苗の翻訳がすんなりと行かない
例として、『続明暗』を挙げている。漱石の『明暗』を読んでいないと
水村美苗の『続明暗』は理解できないというわけだ。これは、心配
ないのではないか。漱石の『明暗』は英訳もある。スナイダーが
問題にしているのは、翻訳の問題ではないのではないか。
村上効果を言いたいがための記事のように思える。

Haruki Murakmi is globally known, but he has never been my cup of tea;

one of his themes could be hacked and mingled in the Mainich Daily's

sensational or sex-addicted section; the fabrication is to do a damage

to any remnant good images of Japan. Haruki Murakami somtimes writes

first in English and put it into Japanese. This makes it easier for his

translators to work on his texts. This article is on the strategies

Murakami has exerted to be a worldly renowned novelist. I wonde if

what Snyder calls "Murkami Effect"---a novelist isnow required to be

globally recognized---will be a new criterium or remain as Snyder's

conceit of literary industry.

I haven't read Minae Mizumura, whose work is supposed to be no easy

to translate because her text is overwhelmingly rich in its textuality,

for example, you have to know Soseki's Meian before you read her

Light and Darkes Contued. Even if it is so, MInae Mizumura shall be

more promoted instead!
