The Murmur of the Stream
by Noriaki Sumida
At the turning of the seasons, I walk the path along the mountain stream.
The midnight rain has made the camellias drop their blossoms.
Separated from their calyxes, their red faces gaze up at me.
The blueness of the sky is a small, tender consolation.
The afternoon sunlight, having forgotten its own fading, cherishes them.
Welcoming an early spring, a slender cherry tree stands.
Its pale pink blossoms lend joy to the frail branches,
breathing life back into them.
Even the sleeping young trees swell their buds;
at the height of their bloom, nectar overflows upon their glossy skin.
When they bloom, they are newborn.
Regardless of the tree's age, every single flower is.
By the beginning of summer, upon the leaves brimming with green,
creatures of all kinds gather.
Those that live in the fields, those that live in the sky—
all will eventually mingle into the earth.
After the radiant season has passed,
we will surely hear the song of peace.
Until then, let us surrender ourselves
to the dazzling play of life.
