VEGANコミュのJust a few questions...

I'm going to be living in Japan for the summer, and I will be studying Japanese there in a little over a year.
I'm wondering how practical being a vegan/vegetarian is in Japan.

I know what I can eat in America, but it seems like it would be much harder to keep a Vegan diet in Japan. What do vegans eat in Japan? Are there good Vegan restaurants in Japan? In Osaka/Kyoto?

Are there certain brands that are vegan?

The only thing that I would know to eat would be fish-free sushi, rice, beans, and things like that...

Can anyone help me? :(

if anyone wants to respond in Japanese that's okay! I have friends that can translate for me.
Hi, I am sure you will be fine in Japan.

I am not vegan though I used to live with an American girls who is vegan and I found out that a lot of Japanese cusines are be able to make as vegan. However, when you eat out that is a little bit tricky.

That American girl thought MISO-SOUP is vegan. Mostly Miso-soup you have that at a Japanese restaurant is NOT Vegan because its used bonito chips.
Like,Japanese bros mainly made by bonito chips, you can ask that reastaurant if they only use Kelp or Shitake mush room for bros.

If you cooks yourself you will be really fine I promise!
You will find a lot of new material to increase your favorite cook book :) Especially, you will see a lot of vegan cusines in Kyoto.

Especially a buddhist cusine called SHOJIN-RYORI [精進料理] is often made as Vegan.

I can give you some recieps if you want. I am in Toronto in Canada though I want you to have a lot of fun and nice time in Japan. And for sure your future friends will help you. You may need to explain what is Vegan to them first. I think that people in Japan are not so familier to Vegitarian or Vegan yet.

If you read Japanese, you can go

coockpad.com

and reserach or click for Vegitable cusine,Macrobitic cusine etc. If there is some NON-vegan materials, you can just replace with something you want.

Example vegan Japanese groceries:
WAKAME/KAISOU/KONBU(wakame,all kinds of wakame, kelp),HIJIKI(hijiki),SHIATKE(Shitake Mushroom),INARIZUSHI(Rice wraped by sour and sweet bean curd wraps with sesame seeds), OHAGI ( Sticky rice coverd by Red bean paste ),UDON, SOBA,SOMEN, (Noodles), KIRIBOSHI DAIKON(Dried white dikon rachish),TOFU AGE ( Deep fried Tofu), even you will see Avocado, Nuts, dried fruits and a lot of soy milk too now.

When you learn how to cook fried rice with a lot of vegies and nuts, spices, it will be easier and funier! You will be impressed how Japanese rice is yammy. Trust me I can not get those here in Toronto :(

Please take an advantage of being in Japan with fun!

日本を楽しんできてね!
Sorry I put a wrong URL, it should be

This web address gives some vegetarian restaurants infomations. If you send an email to Japan Vegetarian Organaization, they may give you helpful informations.

It is not easy to be vegan in Japan, if you go out to eat.

Best way to be vegan is to cook for your self.

検討を祈ります!楽しい日本での生活ができるとよいですね。
