Thousands of families from Madrid will welcome young people of WYD into their homes.
Madrid, November 18, 2010.-The desire of anyone who is traveling is to feel at home, and this is also the objective of the World Youth Day welcoming campaign that will begin this week and that was presented today in a press conference.
The young people that will come for World Youth Day in Madrid will be able to feel the hospitality of the people of Madrid by staying in their houses and experiencing the spirit of a Christian welcoming. The families will be able to share enriching moments with young people from all over the world.
The offer of the families from the entire Madrid region has now been added on to plans to adapt large spaces, such as schools, to accommodate bigger groups of young people. The families that would like to open their homes to receive pilgrims can sign up by contacting the representatives of their parishes, schools, or those of religious institutions. They are the ones in charge of coordinating these offers from Madrid’s families. The only requirement is to fill out a form that is available at these places and on the WYD website.
Gregorio Roldán, General Secretary of WYD, pointed out that the family “should welcome the young people as our brothers and sisters.” Young people who would like to stay with a family can make a request when they register for World Youth Day.
The Pérez de Lema family offered to host some young people from WYD in their home a few weeks ago. Despite the fact that they are already quite a few at home –they have 4 children- they think that space will not be a problem. “We’ll squeeze in,” commented Fernando, father of the family. “In a big family, there’s always room for more.”
Virginia Salinero will welcome several of those who assist WYD into her home. She comments, “I think that everyone has a mission in WYD. In this case, it is necessary to help the Pope so that many people can come to see him.” Meggy Ngalula, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, has lived for the last three years in Spain and comments, “Many young people from my country want to come, but they don’t know how to do it. I offer my house so that these pilgrims can have a place to stay and be able to participate in WYD.”
The Dioceses of Alcalá and Getafe, as regional offices of World Youth Day, are also preparing so that the families there can host young people in their homes. Jacqueline Sánchez, Logistics Coordinator in Alcalá, considers it as “an opportunity to open our hearts and our homes.” Julián Lozano, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Getafe, added that "asking families to welcome the youth into their home is a gift for them and it gives them the opportunity to be generous."
To reinforce the announcement of this initiative, a campaign will be launched this week that will encourage families and organize them in hosting the thousands of pilgrims in their homes. Information on the campaign will be distributed in schools, cultural centers, parishes, and youth associations, and will be spread through the press, radio, television, and internet.
With their gaze set on August 2011 the families of Madrid are already reserving space in their homes to welcome the young people of World Youth Day.
