Deep sea explorers in the US have reportedly discovered what could be the richest shipwreck treasure in history.
Around 17 tons of colonial-era silver and gold coins from an undisclosed site in the Atlantic Ocean were delivered to Florida by the Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration.
According to an Odyssey spokesman, a jet chartered by the company brought back hundreds of plastic containers brimming with coins raised from the ocean floor.
The value of the haul is estimated at around $500 million.
It is believed there are more than 500 thousand pieces, each expected to fetch an average of $1,000 from collectors and investors.
The company declined to release any details about the ship or the wreck site, citing security concerns. But there is speculation that the haul might have come from a 400-year-old ship found off England.
As the shipwreck was found in a lane where many colonial-era vessels went down, there is still some uncertainty about its nationality, size and age.
However, evidence is said to point to a specific known shipwreck which lies beyond the territorial waters or legal jurisdiction of any country.
In keeping with the secretive nature of the project dubbed "Black Swan," Odyssey has also not revealed the types, denominations and country of origin of the coins.
