In English speaking when I talk about my hobby, farming, one of the most difficult expression is the names of vegetables, especially green vegetables such as 白菜、青梗菜、ターサイ、パクチョイ、みずな、野沢菜、チシャ、サラダ菜、山東采、からし菜、春菊、ほうれん草 which are now in my kitchen garden.
We know cabbage, Chinese-cabbage and spinach. Is the name of Chinese vegetables like 青梗菜 also true in English? Well, I checked it. The answer is yes. It is called Qing geng cai. How about others?
And even if I answered them correctly getting information from a thick dictionary, could they understand what I mean?
I guess there are big difference between us who are basically a vegetarian, and westerners who are meat-eating. From cultural difference, we have many words in green vegetables and they have many words in meat although recent Japanese can understand many in meat like sirloin. Honestly speaking, I just know sirloin is ロース.
These days, a vegetarian has become hot in westerners. Someday those vegetable names in Japanese like みずな may be English in common.
