News from Japanese agricultural newspaper, NIPPON-NOUGYOU-SHIMBUN in Feb. 21.
A village Juhnde in the center of Germany makes it’s own supply for energy by biomass energy made from rye and cow dung. In this village, there is an electric power plant running on gas emitted by bacteria grown with rye and cow dung. Not only the generated electricity but also heat emitted in the generation process is used as a heat water to warm up houses in the village, which is transported by pipelines. Thanks to this system, a family can save utility bill equivalent to 100,000 yen per year. Moreover demand increase of rye brings increase income of farmers.

News from other source
A venture company group is developing a similar electric generation system for medium and small farmer. This system will cost \5,000,000. I hope that surplus rice or other crops should be used for energy.

At last, some gas stations starts to sell bio gasoline in Japan. You know that bio gasoline reduce CO2 emission theoretically.
Two different ministries promote bio gasoline. Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Oil Industry promote bio-ETBE type bio-gasoline, which is released from today. Our car and gas stations can use bio-ETBE without customize of engines or equipments because of less volatility or similarity to gasoline. Bio-ETBE is also used in European countries.
On the other hands, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Ministry of Environment promote direct blending type bio-gasoline. We cannot use direct blending bio-gasoline without customize of engines. Cars can use direct blending bio-gasoline is called a flex car, which is popular in Brazil. This type of bio-gasoline is popular in US and Brazil. Brazil is only country can export bio-ethanol.
I worried about the competition of the two types cause waste budget for research and development.
Using current technology, bioethanol for one car is equivalent to foods for 100 people.
( Refer from Japanese economic industry newspaper 日経産業新聞 2007 Feb 21)

We need next generation technology for extracting biomass energy.
GW bush budget about 4 billion dollars to research and development these technologies. 6 companies use this budget to develop technology to extract bio mass energy from agricultural wastes including wood wastes, orange peel, stems of wheat plant and cornstalks. (Refer from Business eye 2007 Mar 3)

I hope for a technology promoted by a group composed by Japanese companies and institutes. It enables extracting biomass energy from marine algae. In the concept of this project, the group constructs large fields for growing marine algae in Sea of Japan. Algae are raised by eutrophic water from China. This project also expects to solve a problem about fisheries crisis by eutrophic and mass generation of jellyfish.(Refer from Business eye 2007 Mar 23)
