Most of Japanese hate GMO, genetically modified organisms. I think most of them do not know why they should avoid them. There is no obvious report about any harm is caused by GMO in 11 years since united States approve GMO.
Now that GM soybean occupies 89 % of all soybean fields and GM corn occupies 61 % of all corn fields in United States and Japan import 75% of soybean and 94% of corn from United States (from article newspaper JOYO 2007/01/13). Basically GM soybean and GM corn are not used for food such as MISO, TOFU, NATTO, etc. but for animal feeding stuff in Japan. To be exact a company can produce products including less than 5% GM grain without any display about inclusion GMO on the product.
Japanese people prefer not GM grain using a lot of aphicide to GM grain using less aphicide. Theoretically crops modified by classical breeding technique are not so differ GMO. Off course Japanese people does not avoid these crops modified by classical breeding technique. The Japanese people’s avoidance with lack of foundation may make Japan isolate from global trends.
Recently many valuable GMO is developed all over the world including Japan. For instance, GM rice repressing pollen allergen, GM crop which resist to dry and heat, GM corn which can produce more bioethanol, GM crop which repress N2O emission from manure of nitrogen.
Anyway, GMO is prohibited in the many EU countries. I think GMO as the human food will be imported in near future because of the low cost.
I think it is better that Japanese consumers can selecet both non GMO and GMO. If the government doesn't permit the cultivation of GMO in Japan, a company will import them from other countries such as U.S.
We have to notice that we have eaten GMO through the meat and directly from the traditional Japanese food. Media must report that situation correctly, too.
ふじいさn's explanation about GMO is very persuasive. And I didn't know the measures of GMO are different between US and EU. Thank you for precious information, ふじいさn and レイルバグ!
To tell you the truth, I hadn’t thought about the security of GMO seriously. Why do I dislike GMO? I found I had no clear reason. As ふじいさn says, it’s just a image that makes me feel nervous. GMO seems to be unnatural. I admit I am conservative. And I think many Japanese are also conservative. When I buy tofu and natto, I never fail to check whether it is GMO or not and I necessarily choose non GMO.
By the way, I always wonder why non GMO doesn’t cost higher. I doubt it might be mislabeled. Do you know the reason that the price of soybeans haven’t increased. And what do you think of clones cows?
At a guess, GMO cost less expensive when GMO and not GMO are under same amount of supply. At this time, Japanese company seldom import GM soybean for food in Japan because most of Japanese people will not buy foods including GM soybeans. Therefore GM soybean cost not so less expensive because the channel of distribution does not been established. Because some US farmers and Brazilian farmers seemed to produce not GM soybeans to export to Japan, these channels of distribution may work well.
I worried about that some company which want to sell “The natural foods” cheated Japanese people into the belief that the GMO is harm fertility, child growth or mental. These companies hold some lecture meeting about GMO, in which dubious researcher present reports that GMO is harm.
I show one example below.
The below link is explanation for the lecture by a Russian researcher, Irina Ermakova, who insisted that rats which born to rats eating GM soybean become to death in three weeks of life.
Sorry in Japanese.

To tell you the truth, the believability of this report is indistinguishable for us. Now I believe that this report is doubtful, but I believed it is true at first time.
If my information’s accurate, there are similar doubtful reports, but no these reports seemed to be published as a scientific article.
Because many people pay more money for safe image in Japan, some evil company try to cheat these people and insist “most crops are polluted with GMO” and “Our products is only safe”.
I want Japanese people remove prejudice about GMO.
I think you get to the point! I don't know whether GMO is harmful or not, but I think it's true that our desire for purity and healthy life is exploited. While reading about the Russian research you introduced, I also remembered "Hakkutsu! Aruaru Daijiten II." I cannot help thinking that human beings do anything for pursuit of their own interests . It is a sad reality.
I got new Information about GMO informative site today.
A database, Bio Safety Net, starts their test run, which will inform Japanese people about GMO with correct information (reported by Chemical Industrial Daily Report in Japan, KAGAKU KOUGYOU NIPPOU 2007 Feb 9). The database includes
(i) Knowledge including instruction for biological basic knowledge, Q&A, glossary and many links for sites about Bio.
(ii) Search engine for scientific articles.
(iii) Information about guideline or rules in US, EU, FOW/WHO and OECD.
This site seems to include not only positive information for GMO but also negative information. Unfortunately, this site is now under construction and we cannot access.
I hope this site contribute to image change of Japanese people.
Thank you for new information. I hope GMO doesn't damage our health.
What I'm afraid is that it always takes long for some symptoms to appear. Thinking about bird flu and CJD, we can't tell when genes suddenly mutate.
I know my duscussion is loose and rough. But I have a vague impression that something new or new habit might have negative effects on ecosystem. We usually know the results only after something happens like the case of pollution. I think such unclear anxieties prevent Japanese people from buying GM foods.
But I want to cost less on foods. I'll check the site you showed. Thank you!
Thank Lety-san for the response.
I agree with Lety-san’s opinion “I think such unclear anxieties prevent Japanese people from buying GM foods”.
Usually people do not dare to take select a risky way.
I hope for GM rice that repress human pollen allergy because I am suffering from allergy.
To めの-san.
Thank you for your information.
I do not accept their conclusion because they did not take scientific procedure.
They did not exclude other factors except for GMO.
Of course there is a possibility that GMO influence the births of disable babies.
But there is also a possibility that disinfectant in bananas influence it for a while.
There are many other possibilities.
Growing area of GM crops seems to reach 100,000,000 hectare. Brazil has largest area, which reach 1,150,000 hectare. In India area increase 300 % from last year, in which cotton are grown. In EU one forth countries comercially cultivate GM crops.
Large percent of these areas are in developing countries including Asian developing countries.
Sorry, I don't know about GM coffee.
Generally speaking, it is more difficult to modify wood plants than grass plants.
Therefore I guess no coffee is modified genetically.
And also I’m sorry about wrong information in the above description.
According to Asahi Shimbun, Brazil have third largest area in the world in 2006.

I mentioned "Generally speaking, it is more difficult to modify wood plants than grass plants" above.
But There seemed to be some GM tree.
from NIKKAN-KOHGYOH-SHIMBUN 2007/02/22
GM-poplar, which can absorb more CO2 and save cost to make pulp from it, are planted experimentally in Mito. The experiment field is surrounded by concrete walls that prevent from spreading and theft.
From Japanese agricultural newspaper, NIPPON-NOHGYOH-SHIMBUN 2007/02/25
We may become unavoidable from GM-crops?
US farmer seemed to hesitate to cultivate not GM-crops for Japan because of troublesome tasks. Before bioethanol boom, some US farmer willing to cultivate not GM-crops because Japanese business concerns pay premium price for not GM-crops to complement the production cost difference between GM-crops and not GM-crops. Now prices of crops increase because of bioethanol boom and draughts, farmers do not feel benefit of premium price to cultivate not GM-crops because they have to prevent mix in GM-crops and have to spray pesticides to produce not GM-crops. Some US farmer stop to cultivate not GM-crops from this year.
Although some farmers continue to cultivate not GM crops in US and in Japan, the cost difference between GM crops and not GM-crops must increase in few years. I think it is a matter of time before some chain restaurant like beef bowl shop start to use GM crops.
