Remembering Tohoku: Looking Toward a Brighter Future
Sunday, March 11, 2012
2-4 p.m.
Pavilion & Grounds
Free Admission from 2-4 p.m.
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, members and visitors to the Portland Japanese Garden will gather in the Pavilion on the first anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami to remember the victims of this terrible disaster and offer our best wishes for a brighter future for the survivors who still struggle with recovery throughout the region. Koto music by Mrs. Kozue Okabe will send a message of encouragement. In the healing environment of the Garden, the bronze temple bell will be rung at 2:46 p.m., the hour that the disaster struck. Visitors may sign a memorial book and learn about the Nozome community building project of textile artist Hiroshi Saito, who is using his art to provide relief to those still living in shelters in Tohoku. A special exhibition of Mr. Saito’s work will be on view at the Garden in June, 2012. The event is free of charge, but donations to Nozome will be gratefully accepted.
Hello Everyone
I am hosting a bake sale on March 25th (Sunday) in support of Japanese families dealing with nuclear fall-out from the quake and tsunami one year ago .
When Sunday, March 25th 10:00am - 5:00pm
Location Kurumi's House
6446 NE 22nd Avenue
Portland, OR 97211 503-287-3459
One year has passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. The earthquake and the following tragic tsunami destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. A large amount of radioactive substances have been released, and the residents of Fukushima still suffer from severe radioactive contamination. Fortunately, mothers and children from over ten families were evacuated from Japan with the cooperation of many American and Japanese host families in Portland. However, there hasn't been a noticeable improvement in the condition of the leaking Fukushima Daiichi Plant, and the Japanese government has yet to launch any effective decontamination work. Thus, the residents in Fukushima have to find out the contamination levels in their immediate surroundings themselves. Since last year, we have held bake sales to raise money to donate radiation detection devices to people in the affected areas. Thank you to everyone for your generosity and support.
* Please bring containers with you in eco friendly style.
I would greatly appreciate donations of baking goods such as eggs, flour, organic sugar, canned and fresh fruits, butter and chocolate . Also tea and coffee. Please drop off anytime before March 22nd (Thursday )
Anybody who would be interested in donating your own baked goods, that would be great too ! (Can anybody bake... gluten-free and vegan goods ? Japanese-style sweets ?)
Please let me know in advance what you are planning to bring, ingredients you are using (for allergy concerns) and in what quantities, if you can .
Drop-off time is 10 am - 9 pm on Saturday the 24th, and on the day of bake sale .
We will present a display from the Koriyama-city neighborhood where radiation levels were measured with the counter that we purchased from the previous bake sales .
