I have no idea where Bertrand Russell says the quote, but
I feel this is quite true as I have observed the pehnomenon
here on FB. This means those who are well-educated could
be victims of "education" not only at school but also via
main medial. Certainly obstacles to free thought, for their
belief in certain issues has been deeply embedded in his or
her mind. The other day I came across a praise for Chifune
Sugihara, who was supposed to have saved Jewish People
by issuing transit visas to Japan so that they could immigrate
through Russia from the Eastern Europen countries.
It is true that Chifunee Sugihara did issue visas and saved
the lives of the Jews, but other diplomats also issued visas for
Jewish people. Tojyo Hideki did not follow Hitler's command but told
his overseas diplomats to issue visas to Jewish people as well.
Tojyo was the first to be condemned for war crimes.
So, one can trace they made the diplomat hero out of standard one
in those days. When the Imperial Japan was no more,
Chifune stopped working as diplomat, but they made it up
that he was fired.
I always hesitate to point this out, for some Jewish people
here seem to believe in Chifune Sugihara.
My hesitation means "obstacles to free thought" doesn't it?

Yes, Japan rejected Nazi Germany's Final Solution and turned
a blind eye to the Jewish refugees in Manchukuo (almost 40,000)
at the time (they were treated like any other "gaijin").
However, Tojo never instructed the Japanese diplomats to issue
visas to Jews and had prohibited them to do so. Sugihara was
forced to leave the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1947 for issuing
the visas (this fact is even recognized by Sugihara's son, Nobuki).
And, the stories of other Japanese diplomats who issued visas to Jews
are yet to be uncovered. Sugihara is the only Japanese Righteous
Among the Nations at the Yad Vashem: World Holocaust Center,
Jerusalem, so far. https://www.timesofisrael.com/holocaust-hero-chiune.../

Both Chifune's wife and son don't bother the truth; they try not to hurt others., who have been concerned to keep the other myths This is pretty much
Japanese-like. LOL

If one is rational, one can see through the mendacity.

Mariko Shimizu They really do not seem to be lying about Sugihara's legacy.

The mendacity is not about Chifune saving the Jews but that Chifune was not alone in saving Jews. He was made a hero, while there had been other Chifunes.

About the Jews in Manchuria, the Golden Book in Tel Aviv has Higuchi Ki-ichiro,. As leuftenant he was stationed in Manchuria. In 1937 after Hitler's Jewish expullsion and purge, Higuchi spublicly protested against Hitler's policy. He provided Jewish refugees with foods and accomodation as well as permits and visas, though Higuchi had been warned not to be of any help to Jewish people. The Golden Book records those Jewish people whose works are excellent and distinguished, but Higuchi has an entry.
When He had been in Georgia, Dr Kaufman became Higuchi's Jewish friend.
It was paved the Higuchi Route, wich is said to have saved over 200.000 Jewish lives.

General Higuchi did have his own way. His men were all with him to save
the jews who came from Germany and then to Russia; they wanted to
settle in Poland, but about one third of the Polish population was Jewish
and they were not accepted; Soviet Russia did, hoping those jewish
immigrants could work in Siberia. However they were city dwellers and
could not stand working in fields. They went to Manchuria, hoping to
immigarate to US; most of them were poor; they were in the cold,
the temperature went down minus 30 centigrade Degrees.
They had frost bites. Those who saw them felt it was emergent to
save them. Legally speaking Higuchi could not save them.
He worked on humanitarian basis; It was at the Versaille that Japan
proposed equal rights to any one from any country. J
apan got the majority in vote, but Britain and US rejected giving equal human rights to non Caucasian. Most Jews were Causasian, but they had been discriminated. So were Japanese. There had been a good reason for them
to bbe good friends.
Higuchi saved about 20.000 Jews from Germany, when the Nazi told Japan
not to help Jewish refuegees. Higuchi was blamed and accused by people
who did not want to offend Hitler and German beaurocrats. Lippentropf told the German ambassador to tell Tojyo that Higuchi should refrain from doing humanitarian things for Jewish people. Higuchi told Tojyo that Japan was no colony of Germany and Manchuria was no colony of Japan. He made it clear
that what he had done was meant to be for human rights. Tojyo had nothing
to disagree to this; he also emphasized equal rights to any humans.
The Chifune narrative has been a political one, although it sounds humanitarian.

Now it is clear that rationalism works when they have sound base and
data of fact pieces. It goes against reason when they have misguided "facts" or fabrications and distortions of facts. You can see this in the argument above.
There could be a case, however, some people know the facts, but go along with fabrications and distortions.
