Mukashi otoko uikouburi shite nara no miyako
kasuga no sato ni shiru yoshi shite karini ini keri.
Sono sato ni ito nama meitaru onna harakara sumikeri.
kono otoko kaima mite keri. omoezu furusatoni
ito hashitanakute arikereba, kokochi madoini keri.
Otokono, kitarikeru karigoromo no suso wo kirite,
utawo kakite yaru.
sono otoko, shinobuzurino kariginu wo nam kitari keru.
Kasugano no wakamurasakino surigoromo shinobu no
midarekagiri shirarezu to nam oitukite iiyari keru.
Tuide omoshiroki kototomo ya omoi ken.
Mutu no shinobu mojiruri dare yueni midare someni shi
ware naranakuni to iu utano kokorobae nari.
Mukashi no hitowa, kaku ichi hayaki miyagiwo nam shikeru.
　 　
昔、男初冠して、平城の京、春日の里に、
しるよしして、狩りに往にけり。
その里に、いとなまめいたる女はらから住みけり。
この男かいまみてけり。 思ほえず、ふる里に
いとはしたなくてありければ、心地まどひにけり。
男の、着たりける狩衣の裾を切りて、歌を書きてやる。
その男、しのぶずりの狩衣をなむ着たりける。
春日野の若紫のすりごろも しのぶの乱れかぎりしられず
となむ追ひつきて言ひやりける。ついでおもしろきこととも
や思ひけむ。
陸奥のしのぶもぢずり誰ゆゑに乱れそめにし我ならなくに
といふ歌の心ばへなり。昔人は、かくいちはやきみやびをなむしける。
When he was 14 years old and allowed to wear nobleman's
hat, he went for shooting into his land of Yoshino in the capital
of Nara.
In the country side there lived beautiful and elegant sisteers.
He had a peep at them; they were too good to be in the rural
area and he fell in love with the elder sister. He cut away a piece
of cloth from his sleeve so thata he could write poem on it.
He happened to be in a shinobu-dyeing [shinobu means
"long for in secret"] hunting clothes; in Kasugano of spring
field/pale purple hunting clothes of shinobu-dyeing/no way
to know how perturbed it is/my secret longing for you.
She possibly found this interesting and thus replied with
a poem: in the Deep North/shinobu-dyeing for whom/
so empassioned can be---/if not but I?
Such was their poetry exchange. In those days people
used to know gallantry ane elegance!
