Another restaurant by Stephen Starr! It's on 9th Avenue and 16th Street, right next to the Chelsea Market.
I was pretty amazed at the inside of the restaurant, which has a vault-like vast lounge right in front of the reception area, which was filled with good-looking friendly staff. When I walked past the vault, I found an even bigger hall, almost like one in a medieval castle, which had faux chandeliers from the high ceiling and a huge replica European painting hung on the wall. But imitations were quite obvious so that the hall didn’t look solemn or gloomy like a seventeen century cloister, but instead, it looked more like a fun place to me. (My friend said it looked tacky though. But I insisted that it was OK considering the location where fun-seeking people hang around. In fact, if it were filled with authentic expensive stuff, it would be intimidating.)
The service was excellent: our waitress and runners were quite knowledgeable about the food. Indeed, whenever we asked about ingredients in dishes, they answered to each question promptly and perfectly. They were also friendly and attentive.
The food was far better than I had expected. First, “Pan Asian” didn’t sound interesting or attractive to me. Besides, looking at the hip “Meat Packing District” kind of atmosphere, I thought the food was going to be less important there. But I was wrong. Stephen Starr was indeed serious about the food, too. Although a couple of dishes we tasted were a little too salty, most of the dishes were pretty delicious. We had very tasty dim sums and entrees. And the desserts! They were amazing. Crying Chocolate in particular almost made me cry!
The price per person is about $70 for a full meal, including a dessert. If you bring $80 with you, you can have more than one drink. If you bring $90, you may take a cab home.
