235周年目の独立記念日を祝うアメリカフェストが７月１日から２日間嘉手納基地内で開催され、盛大な花火とともにイベント最終日を迎えました。
イベントには、厳しい暑さや時折襲う激しい雨ににもかかわらず、約３万５千人が来場。２日間にわたり、フード屋台やゲーム、米四軍と航空自衛隊による航空機の展示、ライブエンターテイメントやミニ遊園地といった盛りだくさんの催し物で来場者を魅了しました。
イベント初日はSOFAステータスのID保持者のみ、2日目には地元にも開放されました。アメリカフェスト開催にあたり、第１８航空団司令官マット”ザップ”モロイ准将はこう述べています。「我々がこのアメリカフェストを開催する明確な目的があります。日頃我々を受け入れている地元沖縄への感謝と米国の誕生を祝うためです。我々は、太平洋地域の相互防衛のために共に協力し、自由、家族、友情、万民の平等といった普遍の価値観を共有しています」アメリカフェストの趣旨とは友情という精神のもとに日米を団結させることですが、それは達成されたようです。
「アメリカフェストでは地域の人々とともに大変すばらしい時間を過ごしました」とスティーブン・ワン一等空兵は感想を述べています。ウォン一等空兵は土曜日の夜フェストに参加。特にカントリーミュージシャンのジェシー・ジェイムスとハードロックバンド「トゥエルブ・ストーンズ」を観れたことがうれしかったそうです。
イベントステージではジェシー・ジェイムスやトゥエルブ・ストーンズのほかにも、ストーム・ウォッチやクルーソといった地元のバンドも演奏しました。
また、ライブ演奏の合間には、太鼓や獅子舞の演舞や地元アクションヒーロである琉神マブヤーのショーなどが披露されました。
第18航空団の上層部は、[アメリカフェストは]空兵やその家族たちにとって、地元の人々と交流し、今後も引き続き日本との同盟関係を強化していく良い機会になったと述べています。モロイ准将も「［フェストは］ハンバーガー、ファンネルケーキや花火とともにアメリカ文化を伝えるすばらしい機会です」と述べています。

7/5/2011 - KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- AmericaFest concluded with a huge firework display on Kadena's flight line July 2, after two days of celebrating America's 235th birthday.
Despite the hot weather and sporadic rainstorms, about 35 thousand people came July 1 and 2 to enjoy the rows of food and game booths, static aircraft displays from the Air Force, Marine Corps, Army, Navy and Japan Air Self Defense Force, live entertainment and a Kiddieland.
The first day was open to all Status of Forces Agreement status ID card holders, and the second day was open to all SOFA status ID card holders and Japanese citizens.
"We host AmericaFest for two specific reasons; to say 'Thank you' to our Japanese hosts who graciously allow us to live in Okinawa, and to celebrate and share America's birthday," said Gen. Matt Molloy, 18th Wing commander. "We also share the common values of freedom, family, friendship and equality for all as we work together for the mutual defense of the Pacific region."
AmericaFest was about bringing Americans and Japanese together in the spirit of friendship, and for some, it did just that.
"I had a really great time at AmericaFest," said Airman 1st Class Steven Wong, 18th Communications Squadron, network applications technician. "It was nice to attend an event with fellow service members and members of the local community."
Airman Wong said he attended the event Saturday night and was really happy with the performances by country music artist Jessie James and hard rock band 12 Stones.
Along with Jessie James and 12 Stones, local bands including Storm Watch and Kluso also performed during the event.
In between live music performances, there were also presentations from local performers including the Taiko Drummers, Shi Shi Dogs and Ryujin Mabuyer, a group of children's action heroes.
Wing leadership said this was such a great opportunity for Airmen and their families to meet with the local community and to strengthen our ever-growing alliance with Japan, and General Molloy said, "It's also a great opportunity to provide a slice of America with hamburgers, funnel cakes and fireworks."
