バドミントンを言葉で説明するとこうなるんだね〜。なるほどなるほど。簡単な単語しか使ってないけど、自分で説明するときって、出てこない単語ばっかりでした〜。

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock (also known as a shuttle, bird, or birdy) with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents' half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor.
The shuttlecock (or shuttle) is a feathered projectile whose unique aerodynamic properties cause it to fly differently from the balls used in most racquet sports; in particular, the feathers create much higher drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate more rapidly than a ball. Shuttlecocks have a much higher top speed, when compared to other racquet sports. Because shuttlecock flight is affected by wind, competitive badminton is played indoors. Badminton is also played outdoors as a casual recreational activity, often as a garden or beach game.
Since 1992, badminton has been an Olympic sport with five events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles, in which each pair consists of a man and a woman. At high levels of play, the sport demands excellent fitness: players require aerobic stamina, agility, strength, speed and precision. It is also a technical sport, requiring good motor coordination and the development of sophisticated racquet movements.

Like father, like son?
Wednesday, January 19, 2011

If Tommy Sugiarto doesn't follow in the footsteps of his famous father and become a world champion, Icuk Sugiarto would not be disappointed. Not at all.

Of course it would cause him pain and frustration to see his son struggling to keep up with the best in the present badminton world but the 49-year old Sugiarto remains philosophical about it all.

“No there is nothing to be disappointed at all. Tommy is a talented player and as a father I will be there to provide him with all the help and support he needs to improve his career. If he doesn't go on to become a world champion like I did, it fine by me.

“There is always life after badminton. Even if he wins the world title in future, what guarantee is there that he will be a happy and contented man after he is finished with the game,” said Sugiarto, who is in Kuala Lumpur to lend moral support for his son in the 2011 PROTON Malaysia Open.

“I always knew that Tommy has not got the footwork to match his talent. But as long as he keeps trying and give his best on the court, I have no complains. It’s not fair to compare both of us. I was born and grew up in a different era. An era where you have to be brave and have the courage to take on all kinds of adversity in order to succeed,” added Sugiarto.

He also spoke on the current situation in Indonesian badminton where the dearth of talent, especially in the men's singles, is beginning to show.

“After Taufik(Hidayat) and Sony(Dwi Kuncoro) who is next in line? My son and most likely Dhamawan Rumbaka. But we are not on the right track. Indonesian badminton needs to look deeper into the problems facing the country now. We need to put more trust in our local coaches and give them the time and opportunity to mature,” added Sugiarto.
