移行音であろうと、それに対応する母音であろうと、表記を区別しないという考え方に基づくと…
y (Yes); iy (sEE), ey (sAY), ay (bUY), oy (cOIn)
w (Way); uw (tOO), ow (gO), aw (nOW)
r (Ring); ir (fEAR), er (bEAR), ur (pOOR), or (bORE), ər (hER)
(P. Avery and S. Ehrlich)
移行音か、それに対応する母音なのかで、表記を区別すると…
j (Yes), iː (sEE), eɪ (sAY), aɪ (bUY), ɔɪ (cOIn),
w (Way), uː (tOO), oU (gO), aU (nOW),
r (Ring), ɪɚ (hERE), eɚ (bEAR), Uɚ (pOOR), ɔɚ (bORE), ɚː (hER)

面白いことに、bird → BRD と発音表記しており、You pretend that the vowel does not exist. とまで言っています。さらに文字上でも i を消してしまっています。まさに /br:d/ という表記のイメージです。
> 単純に「during the articulation of the vowel」ではなく「at least」がある点も、長母音が発音される時間の「一部ないし全部」を通じて舌が「turned up」されると読めます。
確かに仰る通りですね。すると、『日本語音声学入門』にあった curve-far 問題も解決されます。
curve [kə˞ːv]
far [fɑ˞]
これは大変すっきりしました!母音を発音している最中の「どこかで」r の音色が加わるといった感じで解釈すれば良いわけですね。
a combination of three vowel sounds or vowel letters, for example the sounds /aɪə/ in fire /faɪə(r)/
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triphthong
English in British Received Pronunciation (monosyllabic triphthongs with R are optionally distinguished from sequences with disyllabic realizations)
[aʊ̯ə̯] as in hour (compare with disyllabic "plougher" [aʊ̯.ə])
[aɪ̯ə̯] as in fire (compare with disyllabic "higher" [aɪ̯.ə])
[ɔɪ̯ə̯] as in "loir" (compare with final disyllabic sequence in "employer" [ɔɪ̯.ə])
As [eɪ̯] and [əʊ̯] become [ɛə̯] and [ɔː] respectively before /r/, all instances of [eɪ̯.ə] and [əʊ̯.ə] are words with the suffix "-er".
The three diphthongs /ɪə eə ʊə/ are found only in British English. In corresponding places, American English has a simple vowel followed by /r/, so near is /nɪr/, hair is /her/, and pure is /pjʊr/.
この解説に従うと near, hair は単母音音節です。
そうだとすると fire は /faɪr/ という二重母音音節にならなければならないのですが、
はい、だからこそ、1音節語 fire を/ˈfaɪər/ と表記することに一貫性がないと言っているわけです。この表記では fire を2音節としていることになりますから。
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triphthong

Dropping or weakening of r-colored vowels when singing has traditionally been nearly universal and a standard part of vocal training, but there are now numerous exceptions, including many Irish singers and many performers of country music; though this is not universal. In certain particular cases, a vowel + r is pronounced as two syllables instead, a non-rhotic vowel followed by a syllabic r.
なお発音の指導としてはサイトの中にある増補ビデオでいろいろ触れています。今回の fire と li-ar なら一定のテンポで机を叩きながら、1拍の中に1音節を収めてみると分かりやすいのではないでしょうか。
fire, fire, fire, fire (4拍)
li - ar , li - ar (4拍)
"Fire": one syllable or two?
Wednesday, January 28, 2009
The word fire can be pronounced with one syllable or two.
Shelly asks if fire is one syllable or two because her students are using the word in haiku.
Our Pronunciation Editor Josh Guenter responds:
The word fire can be pronounced with either one or two syllables.
Native speakers can rhyme fire with higher or not.
The word higher is always two syllables. Hence, if you rhyme fire with higher, then you are pronouncing fire with two syllables, whereas if you don't rhyme these two words, then you are pronouncing fire with just one syllable.
If more than one syllable means you can hyphenate the word, then "fire" has only one. We cannot have "fi-" at the end of one line and "re" at the beginning of the next. – GEdgar Jul 30 '11 at 1:46
> The three diphthongs /ɪə eə ʊə/ are found only in British English. In corresponding places, American English has a simple vowel followed by /r/, so near is /nɪr/, hair is /her/, and pure is /pjʊr/.
