Today, a protest jointly organized by Students of Free Tibet in New York, US Tibet Committee and the Tibetan Youth Congress of NY&NJ was held in front of the New York Chinese Consulate (42nd st and 12th ave). The protest was scheduled to begin 4 pm and ended 7pm. The 3 hour protest was joined by 50 protestors who demanded the release of Dhondup Wangchen. Dhondup Wangchen is the filmmaker of the documentary “Leaving Fear Behind” for which he was arrested for making. Charged with “inciting separatism”, Wangchen has become one of many Tibetans inside Tibet who have been denied fair trial and basic medical care. Tibetans worldwide are drawing attention to this pressing matter as an appeal to the free world to release Dhondup Wangchen and provide him with a fair trial. Today’s protest in front of the consulate was flagged with held signs that read “Release Dhondup Wangchen Now!” The protestors emphasized the need for a “fair chance for Dhondup Wangchen” and overall the need for a” fair chance for a Tibetan”. In addition, petitions being sent to China's Minister of Justice, Wu Aiying and China's Ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Yesui and Qiang Wei, Secretary of the CPC Qinghai Provincial Committee and Qinghai's top party official were rotated through the crowd that detailed the present dire circumstances of Dhondup Wangchen and a universal appeal for his release.
