I heard that a new cat cafe has opened near the Kyoto City Hall on Oike Street. It is called 猫会議 and this is the HP: http://www.nekokaigi.com/
I'm surprised that these kind of cafes can get permission to serve food and drink where there are animals around. I think it wouldn't be possible in Britain. I haven't been there, so I can't give a recommendation, either good or bad, but I hope to go there soon.
I have three cats of my own, which means that I can have tea with cats any time I like, but I think cat cafes are very nice for people who can't keep their own pets for whatever reason.
In the case of nekokaigi (above), all the cats have been rescued after being abandoned, so they are helping to cut down on the problem of stray cats in Kyoto. However, this is just a small drop in the ocean, because there are so many unwanted cats. All my cats were found in boxes after having been thrown away to die.
In my neighbourhood, there are some cats who are living wild, and they seem to be quite happy in their freedom. Unfortunately, they seem to get diseases, and are often run over by cars. It's very distressing.
I would like to see more efforts to make facilities where people can take their unwanted pets for adoption, and a social climate where it is easier for people to have pets if they want to.
