ある日気がついた"surprising"も"surprisedも形容詞だということに。辞書にもちゃんとそう書いてあるじゃん。"i was surprised"はず〜っと「驚かされた」という受動態表現だと思っていた私には目からウロコ いちいち「驚いた=驚かされた」と表現するのはアルパークへ行くのに直行のバスに乗らずに、広島駅までバスに乗ってJRに乗り換えて井口まで行くようなもの。(ひとり言・・・。)

英語の場合、こういう感情を表すときの表現から分かるのは、個人の感情は外部のものから引き起こされるということです。日本語は感情は自分が引き出しているということです。(例外的にmarvel 「(尊敬という意味で)驚く」という単語は日本語のようにいいます。I marveled at the courage of the small kid. 「あの小さい子供の勇気には驚嘆した」とかいうのがあります。
