Let's talk in EnglishコミュのSay Hello

Hi Everyone!

I am the host of this community. I began a topic in my other community to encourage adults to talk about anything in English as I noticed that there were many parents who want to teach English to their kids and yet parents themselves did not have much opportunity to improve their English skills.

But, it did not go well .... then, I thought it to myself that maybe I should separate "parenting" aspect from the topic and create another community where anyone can join and talk about anything in English.

So here it goes ...

Anyone?

I am a producer/director/writer in film, tv, music, as well as other entertainment and educational contents. Born in Japan and moved to California as student, graduated from UCLA and now live in New York. I have my own company called Greeting Cats that produce and manage intellectual proparties like the above. Currently, I am involved with Sesame Street's Japanese co-production.

Takechan-man, how about you? You, in Japan?
Hello Gurikya-san(sorry I don't know how to spell your name...) and Nice to meet you Takechan-man san.
I've been checking this comunity but I didn't have time to write so didn't even join...well maybe not because I didn't have time, I think I was too shy to show you guys my poor english skill(๑→‿ฺ←๑)
Anyway, I would like to write when I have enough time to write in english so...Yoroshikuonegaishimasu!!
Welcome, ZNA-san. Thank you so much for writing!!!!!!!!! I was getting a little lonely. Since I saw a lot of parents trying to raise children as bilingual or couples who found each other across the ocean, I thought I would see more discussions in English.

Grown ups seem to have more difficulty in expressing themselves in English while they need to be the role models for kids.

For the sake of our own future, let's kick our butts and practice some English.
I don't think you need to practice english anymore..but I am. so please help me study.
let's see..it's kinda hard to find topics..well do you remember you asked me how is the environment to raise kids as bilinguals in Okinawa? I think here is good place for kids to meet American cultures cuz we have U.S.Bases. Like today, they are having Halloween party open for anybody doesn't matter American or Japanese.
I've heard parents in main land spending so much money to raise their kids to be bilingual but maybe we don't need to here in okinawa.
But you know what...I don't know what to do first for my 9month daughter though..I need advise gurikya-san....
ZNA-san, your English is excellent! I am learning English everyday even today though I have lived in America more than 1/2 of my life.

Speaking of Okinawa, so are there a lot of chances to meet with American service men?

Do they encourage American soldiers become friends with local people? And, vise versa?

I am very curious and sorry for otherwise very ignorant questions.
Whenever I go to Japan on business, I stay in hotels and get English papers to check them out together with Japanese papers. I found English papers such as Japan Times have different views and ways to express their opinions from those of Japanese.

Wonder if Yomiuri's English version is any different from its original Japanese version.
Gurikya-san,

yes there is a chance to meet americans here I don't know if its a lot though. I used have friends in services before. They left okinawa and moved to another station so we only talk sometime by e-mail.
ZNA-SAN ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I wrote a journal today about "birthday" and lots of people responded. I was actually thinking about your journal about your birthday, and then wrote mine. People thought it was my birthday... haha ... But, it is an interesting theory so please check it out. It is about why we feel one year gets shorter and shorter every year.
Hello, Gurikya-san!
I am a mother of 2yrs old daughter and love movies and books. I was a bit hesitated to join this community because of my poor English. But I would very happy if I could talk here about many kind of topics and hear what other people's thoughts. Dozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
Welcome Eritan-san. We, grownups, need to show the good example by not being afraid of talking in English. There is no bad English here on this community.

Yroshiku-onegai-shimasu!
It may have sounded wrong ... I meant that there is no such a thing as "bad English" and anyone can join and say whatever he/she wants in English....
Gurikya-san,

Sorry I haven't write for a long time...I was kinda busy to do work and other stuff...
I just read your dialy at your space and that was interesting. So I guees evertime I feel a year past so fast, I will realize I got older...I can't imagine to me to be 30th..I wis I could be stay 20yrs forever...

Anyway, What are you planning to do for Thanx giving???
30 years old? That's nothing!!!!!!!!!!

But, it is true it gets faster and faster especially after you pass the 30th birthday.

We are going to Bermuda for Thanksgiving for a short vacation. We found a place where the hotel cabana is right on the water with plexi glass as the floor --- you can see the water through it.

I guess in Okinawa the water is pretty and weather is nice so you might think it is not so special.

How warm is it there now?
Hello Grikya san (or should I say GreCa san?) and everyone,
I am working in london at this moment and am also one of the person who is struggling with English still now. So I was looking for something nice for improving my English. Then I found here. Looks nice, Grikya. As I started living in here for study English about 2 years ago, I used to go to the library oftern after the language school untill I got a part-time job. The job was nice for my speaking and listening because nobody could understand Japanese at there and my strict boss spoke beautiful English though she was Rumaninan. It was nice experience. Now I got a full time job here but am really realized that we should keep studying otherwise we can't improve anymore...! Actually I am feeling that my English is even worse because people around me are just getting used to my English so they understand me even I don't speak properly. This community will be good for me to aware myself to keep studying.
Nice to meet you everyone.
Welcome, tae-san.

グリキャ is actually a short Japanese version of Greeting Cats, my company name for one and also is a literal translation of Maneki-neko. In English, many call Manekineko as Fortune Cats but I thought Greeting Cats sound cuter.

About learning English, it was a struggle for me in the beginning and even today after xxx years of having lived in the USA, I still learn English. I went to Los Angeles to study film and TV and I used to spend almost all of my time in library either doing home work for classes or watching old films and TV shows in the library.

During my college years, I took jobs as house maid in Beverly Hills and other places to help the riches and also people with disabilities --- through these unique experiences, I learned quite a bit of different kinds of English.

Nowdays, I do lots of intenational co-production of film and TV projects like Sesame Street, so I work with people from around the world. Since their background is different, their English is also different. One needs to be multi-cultural to really have decent conversations in English. So, for me, English has been a very important mean to communicate with other people. But, without experiencing or trying to understand where other people come from, English will never become a universal language.

Through this community and my other community in Japanese called バイリンガル環境と国際性、I wanted to share these kinds of information and knowledge in different things. So, without going anywhere, we get to experience a little bit of otherworldliness or something like that.

Please feel free to create topics. They will trigger different kinds of communications.

Welcome!
Thank you, Grikya-san,

When I first read your writing about yourself, I could see that your name stood for your company's name. I hope you don't mind me still spelling your name as Grikya instead of グリキャ.

By the way, I totally agree with you in the differences of English among the different nationalities. It will be said about a behaviour as well. Most of Japanese might have had this situation, when you ware asked if you didn't have a car licence and you didn't, you would answer 'yes'. But it means you have a car licence :)
My Korean friend says 'why' when I call his name. Apparently, he translated as exactly same meaning as he says in Korean.

Your other community seems interesting as well. I will visit there sometime soon.
Thank you.
Grikya sounds great!

There is actually a joke about Japanese couple visiting America. They wanted to try something really American. So, they went to have the biggest humburger in a typical Amercian dinner. They sat down and ordered their hamburgers and coffee.

In America, coffee refills are free in dinners. So, while waiting for their humbergers, the waiter kept asking "would you like some more coffee?" The couple was very happy in the beginning but after their dozen refills, they became hesitant and said "イヤ〜” then but off course, the waiter kept pouring more coffee.

「イヤ〜」 = Yeah

And, I have no idea what happened to their humbergers.
Hello, everyone.

I am looking for this kind of community, namely a community making conversation only in English, to keep and brush up my English writing skill. I often read English and sometimes write English in my job.

Anyway, I am looking forward to have interesting conversations here.
