I'll get it started. Where do you live? Why are you studying Japanese? How long have you studied Japanese? What else do you do to study, besides listen to JapanesePod101?

I live in the US in North Carolina. It's been so long ago, I'm not sure why I started studying Japanese. I continue to learn because it's interesting and I really enjoy the Japanese culture. Also, I feel like it's important to know about more than just your own language and culture - so why not Japanese?

I studied for 2 yrs in college and now I'm studying on my own. Aside from JP101 I study the Genki texts and I'm learning Kanji with Halpern's "Remembering the Kanji" along with the website "Reviewing the Kanji." How about you?

I too live in North Carolina. I'm studying Japanese because I've always found the culture interesting, and in the past few years have grown increasingly interested in the language. I've "studied" for years, but it's all been self study--on and off--so I'm not sure how far I've come.

I'll be at a 4 year university in a semester or two, and there I will minor in Japanese (language).

Other than JPOD, I use O'Neill's "Essential Kanji" along with a dictionary, Rosetta Stone and some other books. I've just started studying Kanji; it's as difficult as I thought, though I'm still enjoying it.
I live in Brest, western tip of France.
I'm studying Japanese because I like japanese movies, anime and manga, and I'm interested in the culture. I also want to know if my not so young brain can still learn a very different language.

I've tried studying on my own a few years ago, but it didn't get very far. Last year I took a university course and it really helped me get on track, I'll start the second year course in September.
Japanese podcasts and online japanese contacts help me get the more natural side of the language, and allow me to study daily.
I live in Trondheim, in the middle of Norway. I found JP101 by accident in the beginning of April this year, while searching for podcasts to listen to on my 7 hour long train trip (and back) for the weekend. I'd never thought about studying Japanese before, but I read an iTunes review that said it was addictive, and I gave it a try. I totally fell in love! :)

I also use http://japanese.about.com - here they present almost everything in handwriting, which I find very helpful. Stroke order can also be found in some places.

To learn the kana, I used David Hallgren's cute little program which now also can be found in the premium section of JP101. And, of course, the game Slime Forest which has been talked about in the forum.

Btw, yesterday I went to a restaurant here in Norway and picked up a Japanese menu instead of a Norwegian one! But I guess that was kind of cheating - I was only ordering the pizza buffé anyway... :P
Hello!I am Andre'.I live in Malta,a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea. This community was suggested by a kind chap Utama san.Thank you for recommending this interesting community.

I really liked the site.I regret I did not find it earlier. It is very helpful for me.

I studied Japanese at Kansai Gaidai 4 years ago for 9 months but now I am studying alone. As you can see I am interested in the Japanese language and I also use some genki textbook notes on my diary.Writing them and seeing them often helps me to learn them easliy. The fun part is when practising them with some Japanese.I recommend doing this to learn in a fun way!
Salutations. I'm Andrea and I'm from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Japanese has been an intense passion for me ever since I started learning it two years ago. I hope to major in Japanese sometime in the near future. I have a really convenient grammar book/dictionary that I use for independent study, and I also take Japanese for my foreign language at my high school. Japanese has opened A LOT of doors for me, and 4 weeks ago, I was visiting Japan on a school trip. It was the best time of my life, and I hope to move there someday.

i'm katie! i live in southern california in the united states.....i have ocd and there was a point in time when i would ONLY eat with chopsticks....to avoid weirdness when eating out at restraunts, i would always suggest places to eat that would guarentee chopstick usage...i soon fell in love with japanese food ...i figured if japanese food is so good in america, then it must be REALLY good in Japan.....so i went to Kyoto with the sole intent of eating and ended up falling in love with the country as a whole....i told myself that i can't go back until i learn the language....

I'm a student at southwestern law school....i am currently taking Japanese at ucla....I majored in politcal science and african american studies while in undergrad....i considered getting my masters in african studies in which case i would have had to learn bantu...the only word i know in bantu is "gombo", which in english translates into "okra"....okra is the main ingrediant in gumbo, which is good, but nowhere near as good as a chirashi bowl

Glad to see you joined!
Hi! I'm Liz! I went to Japan as an exchange student for one summer and I lived with a Japanese family there. I did not return again until 2004. I plan to visit again in 2007, so I really want to learn Japanese!! I love almost everything in the Japanese culture, although my understanding is limited, of course. I love Japanesepod101.com!! I audited a class at the local university from Jan. to May 2006. I took a once a week class on Sat. mornings from Sept. 2005 to May 2006. I still need conversational practice!

As to my other interests, they include Tai Chi (which I have studied for about 8 years), yoga, and playing my violin in the local community orchestra and my string quartet. I live in Chicago, a wonderful city!!
hello

Kurosawa akira
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000041/

Two awesome directors. Watch their films and you'll be amazed. liking them is not a prerequisite to being my freind I'm not that picky. :D

p.s My names Daniel nice to meet you. :D
My name is Nicole. I live in New York City, USA. I've been a Japanesepod101.com listener since the beginning. I will be starting medical school in 2 weeks so I've
been too busy to keep up! I'm now catching up with my
lessons.

While in junior high school, I was introduced to アニメ
by a friend. That was my gateway to everything
Japanese! I studied Japanese for 2 years in high
school and for a semester in college. I won a
scholarship to go to Japan for a week and a half in the
summer of 1999, and I really want to go back. Wouldn't
it be fun if we organized a Japanesepod101.com trip? ^_^
Now I'm studying on my own. Other than
Japanesepod101.com, I listen to a lot of Japanese music (singing along really helps pronunciation, so I suggest you all do this!) and I read various
My favorite J-pop artists include
(Amuro Namie, Utada Hikaru,
and Koda Kumi). My favorite 漫画 is るろうに剣心 (Rurouni Kenshin). What do all of you like?

Let's all become great study buddies!
うたまさん,Japanesepod101.com コミュにようこそ!

Nice to meet you! Nicole!
u konw a lot of japanese songs and Manga.
倖田來未 came my building for travel shot today!

Anyway,let's have fun this コミュ!
Hi Nicole!

As far as Japanese music goes, my favorites are love psychedelico and Eastern Youth....my guilty pleasure is hirai ken

Katieさん、
I also like Love Psychedelico and Hirai Ken.
When he debuted I thought he was so mysterious! ^_^
As a law student how do you find balancing school
work with your Japanese hobby? I’ve been afraid of
having to stop studying once I start medical school.

I believe the only Kurosawa Akira film I've seen is
Ran. He was such a great director! On the other
side, I love British musicians, and my sister and I hope
to one day visit England. Back in June, we were able to
meet Keane! I think they're my favorite British band at
the moment. ^_^

またね。
Nicole

Hello everyone,
I live in Nagano Japan, home of the 1998 winter olympics. But I'm originally from Michigan, USA. I studied Japanese in University, but have only recently started studying again after a 5 year hiatus.

What else do I do to study?...
I just finished wading through the JLPT grammar study guide. I watch Japanese dramas. (I'm loving 14才の母 right now). I live in Japan and I work in a Japanese school, so I really have no choice but to study constantly. I only work with 2 other English speakers, neither of who are fluent speakers.

Why do I study Japanese?
I started because I was interested in kanji. I stopped because I hated living in Tokyo. And I started again because I realized that it would take me ages to reach the same level of proficiency in Thai, as I already had in Japanese.

Hi!
I'm Kamsin, from England. I live in Chiba-ken right now and teach English at Kanda University of International Studies. i'm studying Japanese because I live in Japan! I want to be fluent in Japanese so I can talk with Japanese people about a whole range of subjects. Right now the subjects I can talk about in Japanese are limited so I often feel it's regrettable that I couldn't talk at more depth. I also think it's good to study a foreign language along with my students. For one thing I can understand my students feelings about studying a foreign language.

At the moment I'm taking a three week summer intensive course in Tokyo at at place called Kai Japanese language school. It's a really school so I really recommend it for anyone whose thinking about studying Japanese in their summer holiday next year. I also try to write my diary on mixi at least once or twice a week in order to practice Japanese.

One last thing please let me know if you can recommend any Japanese films or easy to read books (in Japanese)!

Hello everyone!

My name is Patrick, I am italian and I live in Bologna, Italy. My father is british so I am almost mother tongue in English.

I love to travel and travelled to many countries. But I unexpectedly fell deeply in love with Japan during my first trip to Toko and Kyoto in January. Deeply than I could imagine.涙

I don't know exactly why, or if there is a single reason, but when I came home I deeply missed Japan. So I started learning the language seriously with a teacher (I was already trying to learn something before with japanesepod and a book to prepare for the trip). I have been studying for 8 months now and I think I am really making progresses.

I missed japan so much that I came back last july, only 6 months after the first trip, and I visited Hokkaido. It was great and I was very happy because I could talk to people! I have several japanese friends I keep in touch with, but I really need to talk to make more progresses.

Please add me as a friend if you like and I welcome any advice on improving my japanese.

p.s. I love Japanesepod101.com but I really miss the 'feel' of the beginner season one which I think it's the funniest and still best achievement of the web site, though a bit chaotic... I am just so sad that I discovered it 5 years after it first aired and so I wasn't able to participate in the comments and community

Also, in the picture below, it's me during my first trip with my friend Yu.
