英語口語コーナーコミュのwe hooked up

From what I learnt, "we hooked up" does not really mean "we had dated". Some years ago, my HK friend introduced me to his friends and told them "we hooked up since teen". Then one of his friends from UK whispered to me and asked whether I've had sex with my friend. I was shocked he asks such question and asked why. Then he just said: "Because he says u hooked up." I'm now just wondering how you think about the meaning of "hook up".

Sometimes, people use the expression "hook up" as in, "meet up" or something of that sort.
For example, "Let's hook up around 3." means "Let's meet up at 3."
But most of the time, I hear it used in the other sense, which is "to have sex".
it depends on situations or what kind of conversation you're having.
However, me and my buddies use it as “having sex with”all the time.
I hear it used which is "to have sex"(make love with someone) or to meet and spend time with boyfriend/girlfriend.
I think it can mean sex, but I've never used it like that. I often say
something like, "do you want to hook up later" meaning do you
want to meet later for a drink. Another expression I sometimes
use which has a similar meaning is "kick on". e.g. "it was 3am and
everyone was going home but me and Kayo kicked on." Meaning
we went out drinking.
"hook up" have both meanings but in that context it must have sounded ambiguous - that's why the friend asked you to confirm what your friend said was what he/she thought, I guess.
It's slang, judge by the context and feel of conversation.
*******

A: What are you doing on Friday night?

B: I'm going to go to dinner with this girl I've been hooking up with.

B: Oh, OK, cool. Do you want to maybe hook up on saturday night?

A: For sure man, just name the time and place.

******

A: What's wrong?

B: I hooked up with my sisters best friend last night.. I kind of regret it.

*******

A: Did you manage to hook up with Jeff and Adam last night?

B: Yeah we met up outside the club.

Hope these examples are helpful!
Thanks! I know that could mean of 'having sex with someone' but wondering how many people would think its meaning as 'having sex' only.
BTW, also wanna know is there any different between American and English (or other native English speakers) for the meaning of it??
Hmm... In Australia, to my knowledge, 'hook up' would imply 'to go out with' usually, though we do understand that not everyone means that. I don't actually know many people who use it though, and of those who might, they would nearly always be implying something more significant.
Not referring to dating, I'd ask, for example:
'Did you see/meet/find such and such last night?' Depending of course on previous conversations, and the relationships of the people referred to.
Australia here.

As others have said, it has dual meanings.

Depending on the context/previous conversations etc we would be able to assume which one someone is talking about (sex or just simply meeting someone)

So I guess it could just be one of those live and learn things =)
I live in Canada.
I don't know what the general population thinks of the expression "hook up" in Canada, but, to me, to use "hooked up" to imply that you had sex with someone seems so juvenile. I don't mean that the expression itself is juvenile, but the way it is used (well, the way I heard it being used anyway) sounded that way.

When I was in university, I heard the expression many times. And it's safe to say that, most of the time, it meant "I had sex with someone (like a one night stand, no-strings-attached sort of sex)"

And the people I associate with now are very mature and smart people, so I don't hear it used that often anymore.

Now, this one is a little different, but the expression "hook me up" has another meaning. I heard this a lot in Montreal, mostly used by boys. It means "give it to me" or "get it for me".
