Compare to the other countries in Europe, like Italy and France and Spain etc....Why do you think Brtish food is famous for unpleasant and untasty food in the planet?Might be some historical reasons?
They've got such a great climate, srounded by the sea and field and lakes.....

I think it's based on a rather old notion of English food. Back in the 1950s, 60s and 70s (basically, after thirty years of war), food in England was very bad indeed.

Then some English people rediscovered our own history of food.

Nowadays we can eat fantastic food here, especially in London and the major cities, but the perception of food abroad hasn't changed very much.

But at the same time something really very bad happened: Supermarkets started to become monopolies and changed the whole relationship of consumer of food and supplier of food. Today you're very lucky if you can find a small shop supplying, say, ordinary quality meat. The four major chains of supermarket are everywhere and have destroyed high streets, small shops and small meat & veg suppliers.

The end result is really a terrible situation - people like me who are interested in food, but have a problem getting even simple ingredients. For example, to buy decent pork belly I have to drive 20 miles.

Hopefully we'll be able to lobby the government to get rid of the supermarket monopolies, but given the current mercantile government, I fear that could take 20 or 30 years to correct.

To ZA:

I made this Shepherd's pie (http://www.cookingwithrichard.com/2006/05/29/shepherds-bush-pie/) using local lamb, and it was truly delicious.

This is my rhubarb and custard (http://www.cookingwithrichard.com/2006/06/27/rhubarb-and-custard/). I must make a decent crumble and post it at some point.

And finally, bread and butter pudding is something I've been meaning to make, but not got round to get, but if I do make it, I'll post it here and on my blog http://www.cookingwithrichard.com/ .
To ZA:

I would caution about buying vegetables in supermarkets in the UK. They are not as cheap as they want you to believe. Try going to an ordinary food market (if you can still find one) and buying a selection of vegetables - it'll be a lot cheaper. If you are in London you should still be able to find one. Near to me, there are three vegetable markets in Watford which I visit from time to time, and I find they are not only much cheaper, but they have a wider and better stock of vegetables.
More to the point though, the producers who supply supermarkets are having a very hard time and they have to spray their fields with too many chemicals and fertilisers in order to fulfil the demands of supermarkets, so what you get may look good but probably isn't healthy.

Rich.
