ヴォネガットの日　KV14

11月11日、カート・ヴォネガットの日。

生前、カートおじさんは、肘当てのついたセーターやジャケットをよく着ていた。
そんな覚えがあった。
それで、ウェブを探してみたけれど、"肘当て"つきとわかる写真は、見つからなかった。

かわりにいくつかの、肘当て目撃情報やそれにまつわる描写を見つけた。

そして、そのおかげで、カートおじさんの人形や指人形があるのを知った。

誰が買うんだろう？　わからない。
でも、自分の好きな人のお人形が売られているなんて、ちょっと. . .
いやいや、かなりうれしい。

ついでに。次の二つの言葉を知れたのも、よかった。

battered （形）使い古して傷んだ、ぼろぼろの
natch　（副）当たり前、もちろん　【語源】naturallyの短縮形

　　a battered orange blazer with elbow patches
　　着古した肘当てつきのオレンジ色のブレザー
　　tweed sport coat (with elbow patches, natch),
　　ツイードのカジュアルな上着（肘当てがついてる、もちろん）

Anyway, I did some research, and it turns out the “Mark Twain” and “Kurt Vonnegut” finger puppets are one and the same, except for their clothing and hair color. At the end of the assembly line, I'm told, “Mark Twain” is clad in a white coat and tie, and his hair and mustache are left white; “Kurt Vonnegut,” on the other hand, is clad in a rumpled brown corduroy jacket with elbow patches, and his hair and mustache are dusted a light brown. They are considered the “Ford” and “Mercury” of the literary magnetic finger puppet industry, which I'm told is rapidly outstripping the book-publishing industry.
