The Higashisanjyo-dono Palace was a noble residence located in the Sanjo district of Heian-kyo during the Heian period. It is considered a prime example of shinden-zukuri architecture and was established by Fujiwara Yoshifusa, passed down through the Sekkan family line. Fujiwara Kaneie (929-990) rebuilt the residence in 969, transforming it into a villa for his daughters who were entering the court. It served as a place for raising princes and was occasionally used as a temporary imperial palace, known as a sato-dairi, or an outer palace for the emperor's in-laws. The Higashisanjyo-dono Palace was also referred to as the Higashisanjyo-in, Higashisanjyo-in-den, or Higashisanjyo-dai. It reached its peak during Fujiwara Kaneie's time, and he himself was often called the "Higashisanjyo-dono." Following the destruction of the main imperial palace in 1005, it was used as the sato-dairi for Emperor Ichijo, but it burned down in 1166.
