I joined a group of volunteers to deliver free food and daily commodities to
the area hit by the massive Tsunami in Tohoku, Japan, in 2011.
One day during my volunteering work, in the same year.
I was handing out free food, however,
A middle-aged woman came toward me and told me that
the food you gave me was a very small amount.
Why couldn't you bring more? We had no cooking tools even knives,
what would you want me to do with the veggies?
Why couldn't you think more carefully for us and come for help?
I felt a deep sadness.
We might get thankfulness but, we were not supposed to be rejected.
I'm writing and recalling my memory about that now.
As I turned 51 and realized one thing at last.
I was there but not for them.
I was there for myself to get the experience of a task called volunteer.
So I was not in their shoes to see things, to feel things, and
to be able to have empathy.
She was seeing through my mind.
