Joy: The Spiral Dynamics of Spiritual Health Realization
1. The presentation is about my participatory study on spiritual health realization. Through the theoretical and practical studies, I have reached a hypothesis that spiritual health realization is a spiral dynamic process and takes place in any developmental levels with the fundamental construct, Joy. 2. The frame of the study is also spiral dynamic. First I have studied the theoretical background of Spiritual health. Next, based on the theories I have developed an educational program and also a scale to measure Spiritual Health. Using the program and the scale I have been teaching, observing, and evaluating the course for five years. The outcomes of the practical approaches have enabled me to construct the models and theories on spiritual health realization. 3. The structure of the study is integral as shown here. Theoretical researches have been done in the field of transpersonal thought as well as health science and main-stream psychology. Spirituality is impossible to conceptualize and always has the contradictory descriptions; such as higher/deeper, outside/inside, nowhere/everywhere. The object of the study limits the concept of health with some implications of transpersonal thoughts. The assessments of the practical approaches have been done both quantitative and qualitative. 4. First I will explain the Theoretical reviews of Spiritual Health. The definition of Spiritual health is different according to the contexts. I focused the field of health promotion and related areas such as holistic education and positive psychology. 5. WHO’s proposed definition of health, which added spiritual dimension is well known. In this context, spiritual health is explained as the fourth dimension of health. Hawk’s meta-analysis of the reviews on spiritual health explains that spiritual health emphasizes meaning/purpose and relational awareness. These are narrower definitions. On the other hand practitioners often use the wider definition of spiritual health including all dimensions of health: physical, mental, social and spiritual. They use the term spiritual health almost synonymous with holistic health. Holistic Education specialists emphasize the relational construct of spiritual health as soul’s care. Mainstream Psychologists have started to study spirituality recently as one of the character strengths and virtues in the area called positive psychology. 6. This slide is a model of spiritual health concerning of the relatedness. Spiritual health realization is to foster the relatedness with self, others, nature, and transcendent. Horizontal and vertical relatedness can be called ecological, global and existential. The relatedness-focused definition is popular among holistic education as well as the field of health promotion. This research uses the relatedness-focused definition operationally. 7. Now, I would like to speak about my program and assessment scale of spiritual health. 8. Flow of the each class is designed to start from intellectual leaning, then activities, and back to intellectual learning with the experiences. Start with a short lecture, then ice breaking or relaxation techniques with breathing /stretching with a touch of humor which usually cause students laughter. The physical relaxation helps them to concentrate inner word. After that, Individual or paired activities like meditation, thought experiments, body works are offered. Next, the students make a group of 5 or 6, and then share the previous experience in group discussion. Group leaders summarize and present to the whole class, then I will give them non-judgmental comments. 9. The teaching materials include Okano’s Cosmology Education, Assagioli’s Psychosynthesis, and WHO’s life skills Education program. Cosmology Education based on the Buddhist wisdom of depth psychology and contemporary science offers the relational cosmology. Psychosynthesis is a theory and practice of transpersonal psychology, which was developed from psychoanalysis. The role of Life Skills Education is to help the students to realize the inner change to behavior. These three materials have been integrated to balance the various learning experiences. Cognitive/Theoretical vs. Behavioral/Practical and Scientific/intellectual vs. Artistic/emotional shown in the table. 10. The assessment scale to measure Spiritual health has developed based on psychosynthesis theory. The original items of the scale were collected mainly from Assagioli’s clinical checklists of psychosynthesis. Some items were added from other related scales such as, Spiritual well being scale, and descriptions of mature personality and relationship. The data of 1300 students were exploratory factor analyzed. The derived 3 factors constructed a short version of the test. I named it SP-TEST and have confirmed its reliabilities and validities. 11. The three factors of spiritual health are: Awareness, Will, and Joy. Here are the examples of the each factor’s items in SP-TEST. Factor 1 awareness (READ) Awareness is concerned with the relatedness with self, others, nature and specially with the transcendent. Factor 2 will (read). Will has a directive function not to suppress fundamental drives but to regulate it to maximize the function of the individual as well as the surroundings. Joy is not limited to the reflected emotion of the outer world but deliberate situation within which is mediated by gratitude of the relatedness. 12. These are spiritual health types classified by the scores of each factors of SP-TEST. Capital letters means high scores and the small letter means low score in each factors. High and low of 3 factors ( 2 times 2 times 2) consists of 8 types. For example, the second type of spiritual health describes high score in the factor awareness and will, and low score in the factor joy. The type is named ethical spiritual health. Naming of the spiritual health type focuses the positive aspects in educational consideration. 13. Now I will report the recent practice just finished last month. 14. The title of the course is Personality. I met students Friday morning from 9:30 to 12:30 weekly from the beginning of October to the end of January. 71 students enrolled and 69 were completed the course. The numbers of female and male students are 34 and 35. The class is open to non-psychology majors’ freshman to graduate students. Mean age of the students was 19.4. 15. Before and after the course I administered SP-TEST to assess changes in students’ spiritual health. At the end of each class all students filled out comment sheets, and at the end of the course, all submitted progress reports which they were told would not affect their grades. At the end of the term, eight students volunteered for half-hour long semi-structured individual interviews with me, observed by a graduate assistant.. 16. The most of the students shows the enhancement of spiritual health. The total score of SP-TEST improved significantly after the course. The students’ comments sheets showed improved awareness for relatedness with self, others, nature, and the transcendent. Most mentioned the enhancement of acceptance of self and others. Students also expressed gratitude for feeling the relatedness, and their sense of obligation to participate in the greater world. 17. This shows the mechanism of spiritual health realization derived from the students’ qualitative data analysis. The awareness of relatedness with nature and others was improved from scientific lectures and the relatedness with self and transcendent from activities such as a guided image works and body works. With awareness of the relatedness, the students showed will and joy each mediated by obligation and gratitude. Will selects the direction to go and Joy supplies the energy to move. The function of Will and Joy compensate each other to realize spiritual health. Awareness leads the enhancement of Will and Joy. Also deeper/higher awareness takes place with will and joy. The three factors were observed to work synchronically. 18. I would like to show you the models of spiritual health realization, which has a spiral developmental line in both dimensional and factorial. The realization is not a state but a dynamic process occurring any moment. 19. I made up a sphere model of spiritual health realization. To make it simple I will show you horizontal and vertical cutting models in dimensional and factorial aspects. 20. This is a horizontal cutting of dimensional model. 4 dimensions of spiritual health construct a nesting structure called holarchy. Lower dimension is included and transcended by the higher dimension. Spiritual dimension includes all 3dimentions. This model integrates the narrower and wider definitions of spiritual health. 21. This is a vertically cut dimensional model. The individual consciousness goes up and down toward spiritual health realization. The movements are explained like a mobius cycle which has no inside/out, endless rapid movements between the dimensions. Higher self and Inner self are called true self or transpersonal self which is the same unreachable concept. Spiritual Health Realization is explained as a dynamic process towards true self. 22. This shows the factorial model of horizontal cut. In this flat field Will and Joy work synchronically in every dimensions of spiritual health. The spiral movement of the sphere explains the mixture feeling of spiritual health realization. 23. This vertical cut model explains Awareness function. Awareness occurs in every dimensions of spiritual health. The developmental line of awareness is irregular spiral and enabled to predict the course. 24. This study showed the possibility for spiritual health realization in any developmental levels by spiral dynamic model. Spiritual awakening may not be for everybody, but spiritual health can be realized in regular college course. Spiritual health Realization is a dynamic process of synchronically functioning of 3factors: Awareness, will, and Joy. Joy is essential, for it provides energy to move toward spiritual health realization.
