The objectives of this study is to place ‘Spirituality’ in Mind-Body medicine and to propose a new model of psychosomatic approach.. [Background] Spirituality is an essential element in the quality of life (QOL); however, it carries an anti-scientific image that is not well regarded in medicine in Japan. Ikemi has proposed the importance of a prayer-like attitude of devotion and a positive acknowledgement that spontaneous regression of cancer can occur. He does not use the term, spirituality; however, the prayer-like attitude he refers to must be spiritual and plays an important role in the healing process. Recently, the term, spiritual, has been translated into the terms as ecological and ethical and the Psychosomatic medical models added these terms have been used. With this re-definition, some of the concepts relating to spirituality are becoming accepted in scientific areas. However, certain aspects of spirituality, such as the transpersonal concept, which is essential to spirituality, have been abandoned. [Method] In this paper the author will explain Spirituality from the Transpersonal Psychology view point, as applied to the Wilber Model and Assagioli’s Psychosynthesis Theory, then clarify misunderstandings about spirituality focusing particularly on the following: [Results] 1. Spirituality is a scientifically acceptable concept both in the physical sciences and in empirical sciences with its operational definision. While it is true that there are some scientifically unproved areas in spirituality, as with several other sciences, this should not cause us to avoid spirituality in medicine. 2. Spirituality is highly related with mental process but not a part of it. It is a nonlocal conciousness beyond individual limited being. 3. Spirituality is not an application of ethics, whereby an individual considers what he or she must do or not do; rather, it is an attitude of spontaneous joy. 4. The ecological point of view emphasizes a horizontal relatedness with nature and other people. Spirituality also has in addition a vertical relatedness with something we might consider greater. [Conclusion] Spirituality is indispensable for Holistic/Integral Medicine, and is best understood with the model of bio-psycho-socio-spiritual approach in Psychosomatic Medicine. Spirituality plays a potentially vital role in psychosomatic medicine and will be recognized and applied not only in the spiritual care of hospice patients but also in such health-promotion areas as salute genesis. Bio-Psycho-Socio-Spiritual approach is proposed with the concept of Spirituality, which is separated from mental process ,and which includes both ethics and ecology.
