So the WC was officially kicked off last night in a spectacular fashion, and we weren't disappointed with the subsequent footy play!

GERMANY v. COSTA RICA

The Germans won a well-deserved game! Lahm set the tone with his goal only 6 minutes into the game, though not to be outdone, Wanchope quickly netted a goal for his Costa Rican counterparts. Wanchone would go on to score his team's second goal, but not before Germany's Klose would knock a couple more goals in, followed by another point--a beautiful shot that curled and tucked itself into the net--by Klose's teammate Frings.
Whatta fantastic way for the Germans to start off down the road to potential WC glory!

POLAND v. ECUADOR

The first surprise of the WC game with only its 2nd game! In the 24th minute, Ecuador's Tenorio headed in a pass from teammate Delgado. This goal proved devastating to the Poles, as they spent the rest of the game uncomfortable; they'd spend the rest of the game focused less on scoring and defending, than merely trying not to lose.
The Poles came on stronger during the second half, but couldn't manage to get the ball into the net--in what could have been 2 points for Poland, both shots bounced off the wood(goal).
Ecuador captain Hurtado (is that name a joke? :P) was stretchered off the field in the 69-minute, but Delgado proved unfazed by knocking in Ecuador's second goal.

Germany vs Costa Rica
An entertaining match to kick off this world cup.
Germany showed that they are good going forward. However, the defense appeared slow and flat footed for the Costa Rican goals. (although the 2nd goal appeared marginally offside to me, there was another incident where offside was given where I thought the forward was level with the defender)
I'm sure that Germany will make it through to the knock-out stages, but their defense appears too porous for them to have any chance to win the world cup. Any team with a quick striker should be able to run through the middle of the German defense. At least we won't see boring defensive football from the Germans.
The ball being used in this world cup looks like it will produce a good number of goals, especially spectacular shots from range. Both Lahm's and Fring's shots moved in the air, and there was another shot which the Costa Rican keeper had trouble with when a shot dipped and bounced in front of him.
Today we can look forward to the England game!
