Who and Why are we going to do this project?

The design exhibition ‘ICONOCLASM.JP ? Japanese Young Designers present the core landscape of JAPAN -’ is organized by ‘Iconoclasm’, which is a young Japanese design organization and founded on 2006. Most of member studied design or art in Japan and UK, and are participating actively in the world. This organization is strongly interested in the relationship between design and multi-/inter-cultural factors that is one of the most significant issues of cultural communication. Now we think that Japanese designers and culture are facing a serious crisis about intercultural communication between Japan and the West, moreover, this issue has to be considered by designers. For one step of this solution, we are planning and organizing this exhibition.

Exhibition Concept

From the early-twentieth century, Japan has been exporting its cultural values as a consumable symbolized product. There currently exists an escalating disparity between actual Japanese culture, which has been developed and improved through the rapid growth of the Japanese economy, and the iconic classic cultural representation, that is mainly concerned with the superficial expression. Within this, there is a growing isolation of design. In recent years, there have been efforts to bridge this gap, however, due to cultural differences between East and West, this is proving to be problematic. Furthermore, within Japan it is difficult to acquire the appropriate skills and knowledge sets necessary to understand cultural difference in order to successfully become cultural engineers.

In comparison, England has succeeded to constitute the foundation as an information exporting country; this was aided by a rich cultural infrastructure and education system under the direction of the British government. This process improved the value of British culture and made sure of its position as a leading cultural exporter. In addition, London has developed in the field of art and design, becoming a cultural hub for England and Europe.

Globalization accelerated the speed of intercultural communication through the growth of the information economy. However, human development is still strongly limited by material and tangible perception. The difference, moreover, is that this understanding is controlled and authorized by the various kind of power balances, such as the abilities of political, economical, social, technological, and ethnic analysis, media, language, and so on, between sender and receiver. For Japan, one of the problems of intercultural communication is the tendency to attach a great deal of traditional culture style, reducing the impact of historical and foundational concepts and ideas. In other words, we believe that the most significant point for designing and creation is to understand core ideas or concepts, which are usually veiled and ambiguous.

Within this context, we would like launch an exhibition, Iconoclasm.jp, in the middle of September (could be a part of London Design Festival), which is organized and constituted by Japanese young designers as cultural engineers who have experienced a western cultural context and have been influenced by cultural plurality. The Designers exhibiting are either currently studying at, or graduated of, Masters courses within University of the Arts, Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art, come from various design backgrounds; graphic design, product design, textile design, photography, illustration, architecture and so on.

‘ICONOCLASM.JP ? Japanese Young Designers present the core landscape of JAPAN -’ will explore the way of designing Japanese culture with interpersonal communication and the results should be approached from a peculiar Japanese way of thinking; ideas, and concepts, not iconic Japanese representation, in addition, these works will present different techniques, media and representations, which will illustrate what Japanese young designers are thinking and their opinions about designing cultural objects. (Designers, who are educated in Japanese Art Colleges and studying or graduated MA course in University of the Arts London, Goldsmiths College, Royal College of Art, come from various design back grounds; graphic design, product design, textile design, photography, illustration, architecture and so on.) This exhibition will also work as a communicative medium, introducing a British audience to contemporary Japanese culture.
