Tonight, I went to a concert near Lansing, Michigan, to see the Harry James Orchestra in person. I have met Harry and his orchestra when I was much younger, but it was great to hear his music again played by a live orchestra.
The orchestra is currently lead by Fred Radke, who does a marvelous job as the leader of the band. The vocals are handled by Gina Funes, who is Radke's wife.
The band played all of the great Harry James arrangements:
"Ciribiribin" "Trumpet Blues" "The Musicmakers" "I 'm Beginning To See The Light" "I've Heard That Song Before" "Two O'Clock Jump" "Moten Swing" "Barn 12" "Bye, Bye Blues" "I Don't Want To Walk Without You" "It's Been A Long, Long Time" "Two O'Clock Jump" "Oh, But I Do" "Back Beat Boogie" "Cherry" "Strictly Instrumental" "Sleepy Lagoon" "Theme For Cynthia" "Autumn Leaves" "Jumpin' At The Woodside" "James Session"
The band is really solid, and easily rivals the Glenn Miller orchestra that tours throughout North America and Japan. By far they are a first rate ensemble.
I asked the manager of the band if they have any plans to tour in Japan, and he said that they would like to do that in the future. However, as of right now, there are no firm plans to visit Osaka or Tokyo.
Over 20 years ago, Harry's band had plan to tour in Japan, but he passed away before coming to Japan.
I've seen Today's Harry James band led by Fred Radke web site, and I hope this band will come to Japan in near future.
