I was wondering how many people commute to work by MTB (or other bike). I am lucky that my new employer supplies secure bike parking and showers. Over the last four months, I have not used my car to go to work at all. I have used the bus or ridden my bike.
Recently I have a discovered a new route to ride to work. It includes almost no main roads and is very quiet. It is 4 kilometres longer than my previous busy on-road route. Best of all, 11 of the 16 kilometres are dirt roads.
See the map for details - the red line is off-road and the blue is on-road. Check out more of my routes and map0s here - www.mapmyrun.com/user_profile?username=workmx
*Apologies for this being in English only* I am working on a translation...
I see many people commmute by MTB here in Tokyo. Since we are so difficult to find dirt roads around office areas, MTB bikers for commute to work are minority comparing with road bikers. Even I want to commute by MTB, but I should better to use road tires. (which is boring.)
As I see your map, it is amazing. You can run through 11km off-road to your office. What a lucky city!
Seems it is mid summer in your end, isn't it? Here we are frozen at biking.
I've been to work by my MTB since I've moved to New Zealand, which is nealy for 8years. We don't have great public transport here as Japan does, so if you live in town you have a choice of taking a car, biking, walking or running. Fortunatelly, I hate to drive, so I choose the other options, 95% biking, I've got road bike a week ago, so I'll use my roady every now on I used to take mountain bike track on the way back from work at my previous place I've lived, it was great!!
well, It keeps me fit and healthy, nothing to complain!!
Thanks for your comment.
I understand why you bought a road bike.
It is much faster than an MTB.
Although... there are exceptions.
Riding home last night, I took a long avenue out of the city.
It is straight and pretty flat, so road bikes can really build up some speed.
I was riding along when a gal on a road bike overtook me.
I said "Hi." (That is normal for me, I wasn't hitting on her).
She said nothing.
I thought "Typical stuck-up roadie."
A bus overtook both of us and then stopped to pick up passengers.
That blocked the bike lane on the road, so she had to stop too.
My MTB still had its knobblies on.
So I jumped up the gutter and rode along the grass on the edge of the road.
I said "Bye" as I went past her.
Then jumped down onto the bike lane after passing the bus.
I love my MTB.
well done!! workmx-san. Yes, I know, some of the road cyclists are snob here too. I often wonder why One of the main reason I got my roady is because we moved to the town where not many mountain bike tracks are....so it was a deal with my husband that he would buy a roady for me if we come to this town. And he finally did!! I started to like road cycle too, but I miss mountain bike tracks a heaps
