Ok to paint basic shoes u need equipment. There is many things you need however these things is fortunately not too expensive to buy.

Now I will explain all the equipment.
1. Waterproofing Spray for shoes: you don't need this to start but when you finish painting your shoes its smart if u use it.
2. Acetone: To me one of the most important things you need other than paint. Acetone helps prepare your shoes to paint. You can buy Acetone at any hardware store or stores that sells paint. Acetone is also great when you make mistake, because its the only thing that will wash the paint off.
3. Flow Medium: You can buy this in most art and DIY shops. You don't have to use it, but I think for beginners its useful. Flow medium don't let the paint dry so quickly which is a good thing.
4. Tabacco: For when u make mistake and stressed out...
5. Tissue Paper or Towel: I use tissue paper because i am lazy to wash towel.
6. Cotton Balls: U need to use cotton balls to prepare the shoes to paint.
7. Acrylics Paint: I use acrylics paint to mix colors i can't buy with leather paint. However DO NOT paint shoes with only acrylics paint! it will not last long...
8. Leather Paint: Well without Leather Paint you cannot paint... for beginners just need 5 simple colors... Black, White, Red, Yellow, Blue. With this 5 colors you can pretty mix most colors.
9. Tape: Important to use for beginners. You use it to cover the parts you don't want to paint.
10. Paint Brush: You only really need 4 different types. You can use more if u like but 4 is enough i think.
10.1 Medium Size Flat Brush: Useful for painting big area of the shoes.
10.2 Thin Size Flat Brush: Use to cover the areas that medium brush can't cover.
10.3 Medium Point Brush: Use for painting stitching area and areas that thin flat brush can't cover.
10.4 Thin Point Brush: For beginners u will not use this type brush much. Because its for details or designs that you might want to paint on shoes. However this brush also help u paint edges of the shoe.
11. Shoes: Well for beginners. I think white leather shoes is the best option. Because its easy to prepare and easy to paint. You can u colored Leather shoes but its much more difficult to paint. Shoes i recommend for beginners will be:
Nike Air Force One
Nike Dunk
Nike Air Max 90 (All Leather)
Adidas Stan Smith
Converse All-Star Hi Leather
or any other white plain shoes you can think off...
