Here's a topic where you can talk about films that you liked, or ones that impressed you, or maybe scared you to death. In the title I put "lately" but it really doesn't matter how long ago. I believe most everyone has something to say about his/her favorite film, which can make it an appropriate topic to open up an easy talk. And I guess describing the storyline would be an especially good exercise for English learners.
Let me begin: I'd like to tell you about the film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". (AKA "Eternal Sunshine" in Japan) This is a story about a loving couple. They loved each other dearly but then they began to fight a lot, so eventually he made up his mind to break up with her. Leaving her was so painful that he sought help at a doctor? who could erase off all of his memories about her.
This film made me really cry. It is said that memory is what makes us who we are, and without our memory we are lost. But Eternal Sunshine tells us how we are more than just what we remember. In sum, this is a beautiful film and I recommend you see it, especially if you're in love with someone:) Tina
I've heard about the "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and have not heard anything negative about it yet. Jim Carrey has really started to become more flexible in his movie roles it seems. It's definitely on my "to see" list.
One movie that sticks out artistically for me is the film "21 grams". The plot is extremely intertwined with different time lines that jump back and forth, but it all makes sense by the end. The disjointed time spaces really get you thinking about human motives in a different sort of way and I thought it was quite refreshing and original. "Memento" is another movie that does the chronology change-ups really well. But in "Memento" those change-ups were absolutely essential to the story-telling.
"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" sounds
interesting! I 'd like to see it.
I usually like to see love comedies, fantasies, actions
which ends up happy or are blown away
(is this saying right?),
and often see suspense stories historical ones and
grownup youth(I can't find exact explanation...
can you catch?)...which let me think about
life or something.
Let me introduce one of the impressed suspence story.
It's "ARLINGTON ROAD"("Rinjinn-ha-shizukani-warau"in
Japan.
Wow ,it's hard to explain the stories...
Michael Faraday(who 's lost his FBI investigater wife)
suspcts his familiar neigher Oliver Lang and
starts investigeting him,and finds he lies many
things to Mike.Gradually he finds the smell of crime
to Oliver and ...
When I saw this movie I felt like riding on a roller
coaster. The mysterious things comes up afer by after
and the events which are thought to be end,are the
beginning of the next mystery. And the last is...!!
It's better watch it than read my explanation f(^ー^;
It's very thrilling and intersting!
Another is "LA VITA E BELLA(Life is Beautiful)".
It's a story of Jewish father and his son who
thirsts to servive from the everyday life of gettoo
(?camp Can you get it?)in World War 2.
the father never losts his sence of humor even if
he is under difficult situation, and let his sun servive
their camp life like a game.
The last shows despair, harshness and hope...
It was really moved me.
Sorry for long writing and thank you for reading.
Let me know your favorites.
hello, Tena.
Well , I would like to tell you one of furious films I have ever watched, It is very very funny.
it is RAT RACE. I can not stop crying ,when I wactch.
it is about gambling story ,but you must watch .
FUN FUN FUN.

I agree with you about Jim Carrey and I don't just see him as a comical actor anymore. Even in the films like The Truman Show or Bruce Almighty he had an air of funniness somewhere, which may be due to his slight detachment from reality, but in the Eternal Sunshine his emotions felt so real and that's what I liked about the film too.
About "21 grams", you just got it on my "to see" list.
Could you briefly describe the story for us? You know I could always google it but I'd rather hear you.
>Sleepy-Neko-Boo(I made it up;-)
Yes, it's really hard to tell a story in English, but I guess you got things across okay. Sounds like you see movies a lot so the film you picked must be a good one.
One thing I noticed while reading your reply was how different movie titles could be in English and Japanese. I mean, the original title "Arlington Road" and its Japanese title, they have nothing in common. Which do you think better describes the film?
And by the way what do you mean by "blown away"?
>Kunio
The title I've heard somewhere. Sounds like a funny movie. It'd be nice if you could tell us more about the storyline.
When you say funny movie, the first one to pop up in my mind is "There's Something About Mary", though some people may think its obscene (My grandma did).
21 Grams stars Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Naomi Watts in the middle of serious emotional crises.
Sean Penn's character is breaking up with his wife because of different priorities and lost intimacy.
Naomi Watts' character is going through the trauma of losing her husband and two daughters in a traffic accident.
Benicio del Toro is a former criminal who is trying to lead a straight life but seems to be at odds wherever he goes. His character tries to find salvation in God.
If I tell you how their lives become interconnected, it would of course ruin the story. The ending felt rather unpredictable. You felt like anyone could die or live and it would still get pulled off as a great and thought provoking movie.
Hi,Tena!
Thank you for reading my reviews.
I relived you 've got what I said.
I often used to have been escaped from university
classes and spend my youth seeing movies...
Anyway,I used the words "be blown away" to mean
"feel refleshed" or "be cleared the head".I don't
know whether this use is ok or not though...
Can you catch?
And my opinion about the difference of titles between
English movies and Japanese ones.
In 70's there're a lot of movies which has different
titles from original ones.I saw some of them
(western stories or love stories) and thought,
Sometimes Japanese translation tells us the mood of
films better than original ones.
Resently almost all of the titles are same as English
(written in Katakana),and sometimes I can't catch
what's the film shows. And sometimes review tells
us the meaning hidden in the titles. When I saw that
example,I fell pity why professional translaters
don't tell us the hidden meanings or signs which are
sometimes connected to the stories in proper
and nice Japanese.
To try Serching for proper saying to tell our wills is
important thing for us to use words for communicating
with different countries,don't you think?
>Guchi
Thanks for your being cautious;) I sure will check it out!

I really liked your standpoint on movie titles. It never occured to me how the translation could work to clarify the latent implication that the film bears.
Personally I'd felt that the more authentic the better, because translaters can put in too much interpretation of their own, like the film "The Cure" which was sentimentally renamed "My Friend Forever".
It's nice I can see from both sides now.
Watched "Supersize Me" a while ago. It was educational but scary as well. Other than that, the most recent movie that I've watched at the theatre is "Terminator 3." Goes to show how much of a film buff I'm not...
Lord of War was awesome! It had action, humour, great emotional reaction and gave a telling political viewpoint to boot. Definitely one of the top ten of the past year for me.
I saw Philip K. Dycks, "A Scanner Darkly" a couple weeks ago and fell asleep (I was working on five hours of sleep). Needless to say, I missed some important parts, but there was a lot of boredom there for me. I was so looking forward to it because of all the critical acclaim, the star power (Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr.), and the innovative animation style of presentation. Unless you've undergone harrowing experiences with illicit drugs though, it may be a little hard for you to connect.
I also never read the book, so I had little idea of what I was getting into when I stepped into the theatre. It's apparently a faithful movie adaptation, but if that's the case, I don't want to read the book either.
But then, maybe I just need to get more sleep before deciding to watch a late night movie.
Hi, guys,
Why don't you recommed a good Japanese film "Hula Girls".
The movie is selected as a movie for the American Academy Award from Japan.
By the way, a friend of mine told me that at that time, his father was a president of the Joban Coal Mining co. His father had known the declining destiny of coal mines,so that he started a new business utilizing the heat of hot water. It was the "Joban Hawaiian Center".
The movie is good not only for women, but also for men.
I saw the movie "Always the sunset in 3-chome ". These
two movies remind you the periods of old Showa.
You sure feel sentimental feeling, and that's why these movies are successful among senior citizens.
