Soccer Match Planned for WYD Finale
The match will feature a face-off between a select group of former soccer players
Madrid, May 30, 2011 - This morning, the Foundation of the “Atlético de Madrid” Soccer Team, one of the leading teams in Spain, along with the WYD Organization, presented the initiative “¡Gracias!” (Thanks!), which will form a part of the closing acts for World Youth Day this August 21st.
The central act of the grand finale will be a charity soccer match that will feature a friendly face-off between a select group of former Spanish soccer players and others from around the world. The match will take place at 9:00pm at the Vicente Calderon stadium.
Enrique Cerezo, President of the “Atlético de Madrid” team, affirmed that "Being able to contribute to events of this magnitude is always an extraordinary opportunity. WYD has an understanding of solidarity that goes hand-in-hand with the ideals of the Foundation “Atlético de Madrid” and it gives young people the chance to have a fulfilling experience in transmitting the message of solidarity. Soccer is a useful tool in improving people's lives."
Sports as an integration factor
Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee congratulated Borja Ezcurra, Director of Sponsorships for WYD, and Enrique Cerezo for organizing this match, calling it "an ingenious idea."
According to Blanco, "sports are the best integration factor in the world. The Olympic movement combines sports and culture, and sports have values. Society always respects the person and then the athlete.”
Former players from around the world stand with World Youth Day
Attendance at this international sporting event which brings together players from nearly every country in the world is not only open to young people participating in WYD, but all those who want to take part in a unique event.
The match will feature soccer stars such as Paolo Futre (Portugal), Fernando Hierro, Milinko Pantic (Montenegro), Luis Milla, Fernando Sanz, Francisco Javier Gonzalez Fran, Fabio Celestini (Switzerland), Diego Tristan, Albert Celades, Gica Craioveanu (Romania ), Donato Gama da Silva, Toni Muñoz, Santi Denia, Noureddine Naybet (Morocco), Kiko Narvaez, Ricardo Gallego, "Lobo" Carrasco, Thomas N'Kono (Cameroon), Veljko Paunovic (Serbia), and others.
Proceeds from the match will go towards funding World Youth Day and to a charity project carried out in collaboration with the Foundation “Atlético de Madrid”. Tickets may be purchased starting at 5 euros, beginning June 3, at www.madrid11tienda.com or by phone at (+ 34) 902 324 324.
